Silence in the Woods (Monsters in the Green Mountains)

A real page turner!
J.P. has done it again! She's gotten a nonreader to finish a book in near record time! I enjoyed how this book would keep you guessing all the while never losing focus of the story line. Great description of the character and environment, I really felt as if I was apart of the group traveling through the woods. Looking forward (as always) to her next book!

Not bad
Essentially, a journalist guy in the early 1900s gets word of Sasquatch living in the woods so he invites his wife and a couple of family friends on what’s supposed to be a fun camping trip to check it out, and naturally the Sasquatch turns out to be more than just a rumor–but its true nature isn’t what they expect either. Not perfect–the book takes place in the early 20th century, but I didn’t really feel a great sense of time or place from the writing–but still very good overall. The writing was strong and the main character and his wife had a sweet relationship, I was really rooting for them by the end. I also wasn’t expecting the “twist,” though in retrospect it can seem a bit silly. 4 stars.

Page turner/Head scratcher
Silence in the woods follows two couples that go on a hike into the woods and only one member returns. As the story unfolds, Paul Rogers, who was the only one to be rescued from the camping trip from hell, is locked up in an asylum b/c his story is too fantastical to believe. The book jumps forward and backwards in time recanting the stories of the characters and what brought them to the woods in the first place. While Paul believes his wife is still alive and searches didn't try hard enough to find her, he escapes the hospital to go back to the woods of his nightmares to search for her himself. After almost 2 months being in the hospital, he embarks on his journey w/ barely the clothes on his back, ill fitting shoes, on the cusp of winter snows to find his wife. He tramps through waterways, in the rain, beginning snows, and yet somehow manages to persevere w/ little discomfort most normal people in winter gear would find daunting.Putting the fantastical aside, it was a page turner and had an interesting, if albeit, unbelievable ending, weaving in folklore and the supernatural working together in tangent.I enjoyed the book for the most part but not enough to pursue the follow up books next in order.

Interesting intro to local history and folklore
As a new Vermonter, I’m fascinated by local folktales. None are more popular here than those telling of the possible existence of Bigfoot, a hairy, ape-like creature that is said to dwell in the wilderness.J.P. Choquette’s Silence In the Woods is the first in the Monsters in the Green Mountains series that centers around supernatural and unexplainable phenomena taking place in the remote parts of Vermont. It also happens to be a historical novel set in the late summer and fall of 1917.On a warm September day, two couples, the Rogerses and the Warnings, set out on a hike up Shiny Creek Trail, where people have gone missing for decades. Paul Rogers is a photojournalist who dreams of finding evidence of Bigfoot and writing an article that might garner the attention of National Geographic and take his career to the next level. What starts as a pleasant excursion among nature turns more ominous by degrees as the hikers move farther into the woods. As darkness approaches, they are forced to find shelter from an unexpected storm in a remote cave. Before the night is over, the group are attacked by a mysterious presence that seems to materialize out of dark fog. Fear, isolation, and the unknown gradually cause grudges that festered to come to the surface. The group scatters, and Paul Rogers makes it out of the woods, only to end up in a mental hospital in northern Vermont. Two months later and still struggling to remember the details of his ordeal, Paul escapes the institution and returns to Shiny Creek Trail to find his wife and friends who are still missing. He also wants to prove that what he saw in the woods was not a product of a diseased mind, but real evil waiting for its next victim. Will Paul find Jane, Allan, and Deirdre, and get the answers he is hoping for?

A hiking trip leads to tragedy
Paul and Jane with their friends, Diedre and Allan decide to go visit a trail where a man went missing years before. Photojournalists for the newspaper, they thought they could make a name for themselves by finding what could be hiding in the woods. Rumors were spread and they wanted to see for themselves. They get more than they bargained for. There is something in the woods that is dangerous and something unexpected.I enjoyed the way the author jumped timelines and different perspectives. It was done well and the story flowed well.Entertaining read.

Very good book
I couldn't put this book down. Very good read and believable characters. Just hate it's a series, because now I have to find the next book!

What happened?
I'm surprised at all these wonderful reviews. Yes, the writing was good but....it was very repetitious and really didn't have a conclusion - it just sort of stopped. No, I will not read the next book to see "what happened?".

Perfect Blend of Cryptozoology and the Supernatural
I very much enjoyed this novella of survival in the wilds of New England. Two couples go for an extended hike where they encounter an ancient evil as well as an ancient force for good. The result is a harrowing tale of horror, survival, and madness.
