My wife had a full knee replacement and so we temporarily have different bedrooms the whistle couldn't fail to alert you should she need help.

Who needs a whistle? Well, plenty of people from the perspective of sports, safety and a simple ability to locate when line of sight isn’t available. These FYA™ Whistles supplied for review under the Amazon Vine programme come as a pair. They are made from hard-wearing ABS plastic which means they are difficult to damage – just what you want if they spend their life at the bottom of a handbag or sports kitbag and likely to get other items piled on top, so failure at an inopportune moment is highly unlikely. That choice of material is also non-toxic, which is what you want to hear about an item spending time in your mouth. They are bright red, so extremely visible and easily locatable. They are supplied on a bright red lanyard adding to that easily locatable ethos, and this is perhaps the only negative – the lanyard doesn’t include a ‘safety break’ link in case you get entangled in something, which is a possibility if for instance you hiking in woods, and this is the only reason for deducting a star.What is impressive is the sheer volume produced by this small whistle – an ear shattering and unmistakable 120dB, the level of a thunderclap. Emergency vehicle sirens are 115dB so you get the idea how loud this is. The whistle isn’t that large at 4.5cm long, 2cm wide, 2cm at the base where the cork pea resides and 1cm at the business end, which means they are suitable for children too.Testing the whistles they are loud – really loud, and can be heard at real distance. Obviously how far away is a factor of other ambient noise, but if you were acting as a marshal at a sports event held on public roads it’s easy to hear over the top of traffic noise as a warning. A cycling criterium held in a town centre where members of the public are crossing for example to warn them riders are approaching. For team sports where a referee or umpire is in charge these are just as good, with players able to hear the commands to stop play instantly. Of course being red they are particularly suitable for life guards at a swimming pool or beach.Aside from sports uses members of the public who don’t like being out alone at night can use them in an emergency to attract attention – keeping one in a car if you’ve slid into a ditch, for people nervous of walking back home after a late night out to both attract help and deter an assailant, and for hikers keeping in touch or locating a partner whilst exploring different parts of a wood for instance. Given a friend has a pet dog with a propensity to head off chasing squirrels in woods and them getting lost, the ability to let it know where its owner is when they have finished their chase is also a prospective function.I’ll be principally using these for sports purposes, but as you can see the uses are potentially wide. Compact but easily locatable, light weight, and really, really shrill and very, very loud, there’s no mistaking that this is being blown. At just £4.88 for a pair this really is chump change for safety or control purposes.

I had a black whistle but promptly mislaid it. It is probably lying in the depths of a sports bag, camouflaged. Without a doubt the red colour of this particular pair of whistles attracted me to the product: there is no chance of this getting mislaid.It is a pea whistle, a little bit cheap and lightweight and made of plastic. It has a handy braided neck cord though, ideal for when on poolside (or sports pitch) and needing one to hand. It also makes a good whistling sound - sharp and shrill if needed.Whilst I like the idea of protecting this from dirt, was it necessary for these whistles to be packed individually, using no less than three different plastic bags? I call that wasteful and excessive.

I use this whistle when I walk the dog, especially at night. We are in a district that has a lot of homeless people and I feel safe having it with me. Haven't had to use it yet, but I tried it out and it's very loud.
