FIRST STEPS
I think that the biggest problem with this book is in the title. It does contain speech exercises for children that can be used effectively to supplement a program of therapy with qualified therapists and educators. However, by using the words essential guide and strategies, potential readers might be led to believe that it will contain all the answers. I believe this book provides a good introduction to the possible causes of speech disorders and may assist parents in identifying the cause and seeking out the right interventionist. The games, activities, and exercises can then be used in conjunction with the experts. The reviews indicate that many readers expected a lot more than suggestions. The author correctly points out that parents must identify the problem and seek out effective professional treatment as soon as possible. As a special educator who has spent many years working with children experiencing these problems, I understand that parent education and cooperation is key to effective treatment for the child.Parents, teachers, or grandparents of children who are experiencing speech difficulties should be aware that this book is just an introduction to a much larger course of treatment.

Disappointing, not worth the money
Was very disappointed. This book offered no "exercises" for speech therapy. It is only 52 pages but there were many pages with only a page number on them and the spacing was kind of ridiculous on the pages with info on them. It gave causes for speech disorders but nothing that pertained to my daughter, even though she has been in speech therapy for the last six months. Sorry but I can't recommend this book.

Where is the author info?
I'm not sure If this was written by an SLP, but to discuss oral motor exercises leads me to believe that it is not. I was interested to see what information was out there for parents. This is not a book I would recommend.

Doesnt really give ways to help your child. I ...
Doesnt really give ways to help your child. I was expecting concrete examples of what I should do to help my daughter but wasn’t given any. Everything in this book is what I googled.

Kinda helpful
I felt there could've been more exercises and examples. Not a bad purchase for $3 I guess. You get what you pay for

Quick read for beginners
If you haven't seen a speech therapist yet this will be an excellent read. If you have it may clarify some points that you are already familiar with. All in all it has great ideas for use at home with your child.

Ok
This book is good with a number of exercises to better speech in your child. But, it assumes that the parent can communicate in another way and the child is receptive already. For example, it mentions whistling exercises. But, how do you communicate to your child to look at what you are doing and imitate whistling. It assumes a certain level of cognition already for some exercises.

Not Actually Helpful
This book was a disappointment. The writing and strategies suggested are very, very basic and the book doesn't actually offer anything new or interesting in terms of adding to our existing knowledge base of what activities are helpful for kids with speech-sound disorders.

Stay away
This is the worst speech therapy book I have seen to date. Its information is incorrect and incoherent. Do not buy.
