Render To Caesar The Body
because he can kill it, but he cannot kill the soul, which belongs to the One who has overcome the world, overcome him.The loyalty in the Mirabal families and friendsreminds me what a wretched life is worth keepingthat has sacrificed anything else for its salvation. The Lord of all living things and created thingsshowed us sacrifice is a choice, by a silent lambwho spoke when needed and made it truthso no words were wastedand no words were overruledand no words were erased.Jesus showed us the way to speak, walk, see, protect our beloveds, take up the crossand not complain at its weight even as we go toward our executionby courts and lawmen of injustice and by helpless onlookersand that sometimes we have to give away our families into good handsas we make our way forward to Paradise with Jesus. They will understand love they cannot have and hold and prove and feelif it was true. The things evil has no part in, no power against, no grip on, no face to bash in.This film reminds me of the one life I have to suffer throughknowing the reward of Life within and all around me and to come.Thank you to all, who did so well in its creation.

Excellent Drama based on the lives of the Mirabal Sisters and Trujillo.
Based on the lives of the Mirabal Sisters and Trujillo, Dictator of the Dominican Republic. Selma Hayek, Marc Anthony, Demian Bichir and several others make this film come to life. The film shows the depravity and LIES, the Propaganda and Brainwashing that became the lives of the Dominicanos for 30 years. It took the courage, strength and Love of the Mirabal family , the husbands and those who together fought for their County's freedom from OPPRESSION and VIOLENCE.This is a MUST film to watch during these moments were the UNITED STATES of AMERICA has survived the attempted auto-COUP by the former President and enablers on 6/1/21. Thank you for Opening our eyes to what is Dis-Information. This film helps me realize how we MUST GUARD OUR LIBERTY and FREEDOM.Do Not take anything for granted.

Exciting True Story
All thru this movie, you are rooting for the "Good Guys", but unfortunately it is not to be. Olmos plays his part perfectly as the violent, and evil Trujillo. I was on the edge of my seat for much of this movie. One good thing is that it brought down the evil Trujillo Regime, even though the Mirabel sisters had to pay the ultimate price for that.

Great Movie
My mother lived in DR during this time and she stated that it did not matter your skin color. Anybody that spoke against Trujillo was killed. I plan on getting the book and learn more about my own history. I left at the age of 9 to live in the US but would come back a few times a year to visit family.

A fair overview of real History
A friend of mine who is also interested in History told me about this movie and I am glad I bought it. It deals with a real part of the Dominican Republic's History. Maybe it is not accurate, but it sticks to the fact that Trujillo was a cruel dictator in that country for many years, just as "La Fiesta del Chivo" (Vargas Llosa) did. Made in English for the American public, it misses the fact that the United States helped and sponsored all the dictators who ruled in Latin American and Caribbean countries at that time. Somoza in Nicaragua, Batista and those before him in Cuba, Pinochet in Chile, and Trujillo in DR, just to mention a few, were placed in power to protect American interests in those countries. The movie does not portray this fact which would have made it educational for that public.

excellent movie
Usually the movie destroys the story the book had but not so with this version of In the Time of Butterflies. Selma Hyak portrays one of the Mirabel sisters in their struggle to overcome the dictatorship of Truijllo(played by James Olmos) who rules the Dominican Republic with an iron hand. While the ending is slightly different than the book; it adequately represented the essence of what really happened to the Butterfly Sisters.I had read and enjoyed this book many years ago. The movie acted a as a refresher for me in order that I can discuss the book at my book club with out having to reread the book. While this was my goal; I was very happily surprised that it gave me the opportunity to watch and enjoy a great movie.

Good Try!
After I finish reading the book "In the time of the Butterflies" of Julia Valdes I thought, Why this amaizing story is not converted in a movie? Then I learned about this movie so I bought it from Amazon. This have an special meening to me because I am Dominican and since I was a child I heard about the Miraval sisters and how they were killed. But the book is way better than the movie. The character of Minerva Miraval played by Selma Hayek did not achived the expected gold, the character in the book is more powerful defined. The Trujillo play by James Olmos started to look like the real Trujillo at the end of the movie but in grneral it was ok. The film although looks like Dominican Republic is filmed in Vera Cruz Mexico, and the extras used did not look Dominicans which did not fit with the reality, looking more like a mexican sopopera. Most of the places represented in the movie are still almost intact in the Dominican Republic and is a chame they were not used. So for me this movie was a Dominican story without the real Dominican flavor. But any way was a good try. At least it let the world know about a part of our history and the way the Dominican people suffer in that era to achived there freedom.

Touching, disturbing, unforgettable
DVD is in great condition. I've watched it three or four times with different groups of volunteers for a charity involved with the batey's in the Dominican. It will stay with you, especially if you ever vacation at a resort in the Dominican Republic.

In the Time of Butterflies
Not as good as the book but a great story. I read the book before visiting the Dominican Republic - learning the history of the Tyrannical Trujillo regime and the oppression and sexual exploitation of women in that Country. The shining bravery of Minerva Mirabel and her sisters and their husbands is inspiring. How many people knew that International Women's Day is on the day that the 3 sisters were murdered by government agents? As a result of reading the book we made a point of visiting the places it referred to on our visit. You should also read the follow up by Mario Vargas Llosa - The Feast of the Goat - story of Trujillo's come uppance.
