I bought this book on the strength of this authors JavaScript book - which I personally found to be a very good introduction to the topic. The discussion is broken down well and he only tells you as much as you need to know to get started, in later chapters he goes over the material again and explains why it is not the optimal solution, and then he shows you a better way. In this way you get to see how to build React apps step by step.Once you have consolidated your understanding he layers other materials and dovetails these to extend the knowledge gained in the earlier parts of the book. He has a quirky style, but that does not get in the way of the explanations. I have tried many online tutorials that purport to be for beginners, and these rapidly get deep - the mistake many of these authors make is that they have internalized many of the ideas and concepts, and just assume that you will find things just as obvious as they do - they often miss out key and vital ideas that beginners need. Not so with this author, he repeats things several times throughout the book and adds additional things in a timely fashion thus avoiding excessive cognitive load. You really get to feel the process of developing ideas and key concepts.Many tutorials have overly technical sections at the start with complex details of tool chain setups and workflow processes that are baffling to the first time user. It is not until chapter 13 that he shows you how to set up a more professional setup to generate apps - this allows you to focus on foundational concepts first. This presents less of a learning curve and give you chance to focus on the essentials. This may feel like some to be pedestrian, but I can assure you that this is the way to build lasting understanding.

While certainly informative, this book has a shocking amount of critical errors, both in the example code and the prose. In the book's Acknowledgments section, the author praises the publisher, cites how "amazingly complex" the process of publishing a book is. Well, it's now clear that "complex" means that the author submitted a rough draft to Pearson / Addison-Wesley that no one there actually read before it went to press.This book was released 4 months after React 16.3-alpha versions were becoming known, but there is no mention whatsoever of the new Context API. Further, while there's a hint that some lifecycle functions may be depreciated in the future, which they were. It's as if this book was gathering dust for 6 months before it finally went to press it was already outdated and loaded with errors.Don't spend your money on this "update". It's just a careless and incomplete money grab. Go read the officially documentation instead.

Wonderful book

Good for learning the basic of React but enough to make you a mid-React developer. React is not a beginner course , I expected more but got less.
