A worthy read
Not to many characters, the writing moved along at a good pace, the battles were ok. This to me is an above avg Historical fiction series. Conn I. Genghis and Ceasars series are still the best by far but I'd still recommend this book to fans of this type of series. If the book had some glaring problem that I just couldn't get past I'd give it lower stars, it didn't so 5 for 5. I am looking forward to the next books, if anything gets better or worse I will let you know in the next review.

Raiders from the North rocks!
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed 'Raiders From the North'. Having lived in the Fergana Valley where Babur came from, I was very interested in learning more about the history of the region. This novel gave a lot of background information about Babur's life in an intelligent and exciting way. For those interested in reading more about Central Asia I would recommend 'Taxi to Tashkent' Taxi to Tashkent: Two Years with the Peace Corps in Uzbekistan .

Baburnama retold
Much has been written about the Mughal dynasty and it's impact on India. Alex Rutherford does a great job bringing it to light with a fantastic rebelling. Clearly, given the absence of all information, there are some leaps of faith required and made by the author but none that deviates from seemingly the truth or an approximation thereof. As a curious student of the subject of Mughal dynasty I found this to be a fantastic read and highly recommend it.

Historical fiction but realistic nontheless
As much as we Hindus may dislike this part of our history, the fact is that Babur was no worse a human being than Sultan Ibrahim whom he replaced. Our Rajput leaders were brave but knew little about modern warfare, and could not present a United resistance and therefore offered little resistance. The rest of course is history. I thank the author for his meticulous research that allow us to take a very believable look into the mindset of our Muslim conquerors.

spellbinding history
The writing style may be a little sophomoric but the subject matter is spellbinding. And the author does capture some of the grand sweep of the central Asian landscape along with the history. Rutherford, in spite of the writing, does provide a very interesting sketch of Babur's character. I do not know how faithful he is to Baburnama. However, this is good historical fiction.

Compelling reading
I read this book based on a recommendation from someone who knew I had recently visited India. I had found the buildings and history fascinating, too much to absorb on a short guided tour, and this book helped to set some aspects in a realistic context. Because it is based on fact it helped to clarify a small part of the history of a small part of the huge continent of India, that I was fortunate to visit. The story was compelling, I had to keep reading to find out more about Babur's exploits. I look forward to reading the next book to find out what happened to his sons.

An interesting read.
I found this book very informative and enjoyed the way the it was written. An easy read, based in fact but not too full of detail.A sweeping historical novel of life of the first moghul emperor Babur. I had no knowledge of this region or it's history so found the book very interesting.

endless battles and a battle to finish it.
Not bad, good powers of description. Detailed, some intrigue, quite enjoyed it - conjures up visions of scenes quite well. One battle much the same as another - inevitably. Be warned the sequel is more of the same and more of the same and more of the same.
