Definitive Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim Volume 2

For fans of Alex Raymond(as I am)these volumes are a blast.Beautifully done in a quality large format.Not only do we get Flash Gordon but the rarely reprinted(and never reprinted in a quality package)Jungle Jim.Raymond was a superb draftsman an innovator constantly experimenting with techniques and styles and his visual layouts were stunning and man could he draw the human figure and his women absolutely reek with sultriness.This volume reprints much of my favorite period when Raymond was experimenting with brush "feathering" tecniques.As good as the art is the story narrative is OK but the dialogue is often absurd especially on Flash Gordon.Dale is often dipicted as bitchy toward Flash in a Maggie & Jiggs type situation.I remember one reviewer of the strip back in the 80s stating that Dale must have been one hell of a lay for Flash to put up with that hen-pecking attitude of hers.But dialogue aside it is the art of Alex Raymond that that is worth the price of admission.I look forward to the future volumes in the series.

The art is amazing, for both strips. The volume is beautifully put together. It's so large it's somewhat unwieldy, but that's the price we pay to have the strips appear together, as they originally did, and I'm happy to pay that price. The plotting is not very good, for the most part, but it does facilitate the terrific art. The dialogue is wooden but often enjoyable. The characters are also mostly wooden, but still likable. Both strips are very much of their time, and that is part of their appeal. The toughest thing to deal with is the racism. However, that's no reflection on the people who put the volume together. In fact, they address the racism with a note just before the first strip, which is refreshing in its honesty.

Wow! The book is ginormous and when you see it in person you will be impressed. Very sturdy hardcover binding and the printing quality is excellent. Lots of lush feathering details by Alex Raymond and the colors look wonderful. Absolutely no complaints and now I plan on buying the rest of the series.

I got this and the previous book. These books are my introduction to Flash Gordon. Raymond's artwork is excellent and superbly presented here. These books are huge and do justice to it. Binding is good. Kudos to the IDW team!

In the seventies, my father showed me about his childhood comic idol: Flash Gordon. I'm from Spain and american comics arrived here late and drop by drop. These books from IDW are the best by large that my eyes have seen about Flash, and i believe is not possible a better edition. For that reason i think is the definitive collection and the one that fans were waiting for years. I wish my father could see it...

This is the best FLASH GORDON collection ever. You also get JUNGLE JIM !!The larger format really shows off Alex Raymond's art. The FLASH GORDONstrip has never looked better and like I mentioned, you also get JUNGLE JIM.This is the definitive archive book of FLASH GORDON.

Great Book! Excellent Artwork; Large artwork shows beautiful details. Stories up to date -- hard to believe this is from the Forties.Recommended.

Another beautiful book of Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim with the most excellent art ever produced for newspaper comics and a story that is almost unreadable, but no one buys Flash Gordon for the story. Highly recommended for Raymond's art.
