The Net

If you're into computers and you like a suspense movie, you'll probably love The Net. It combines the two quite well and Sandra Bullock does one of her best movies imo. In the film, she lives alone, spending most of her time fixing her company's computers on line. She seems to rarely go out or socialize except with others by computer. She even orders her food over the computer, and it's delivered. Because she keeps to herself, hardly anyone knows her personally, and her mother is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's Disease, so she doesn't remember her. Her only friend is an ex boyfriend, who happens to be a psychiatrist, and she's broken up with him. The fact that she's so incognito has a lot to do with the film. Before leaving for her first vacation in years, she get's a call from a friend in her company who is confused about a weird disk that's come into his possesion, and wants her to help him. Not willing to figure it out over the phone or on the computer, he tells her he needs to see her in person and he's flying to her home in LA. He never arrives.She takes her vacation, but while at the beach she meets a hacker. Both are lying on the beach with computers clicking away. He seems like a nice enough guy, but beware, maybe he's not. The real plot actually begins at this point. From then on it's a mystery and a chase. This hacker works for a shady crime syndicate whose trying to take over the government by hacking into their computers.She's chased all over the movie by this underground bunch, and I won't tell you the ending, but it's pretty exciting. Bullock is really good in this one.PS I save a lot of DVD's and this was one of them. Re-watched this one last night, and while I have a computer (a Mac) I couldn't understand much of what I saw on the computers in this film. First of all I rarely use discs for what I do on my computer which is for email,and to entertain myself with all the new game shows and websites you can have fun on. But my husband and I were alone last night couldn't decide what DVD to watch. Finally we decided to watch and old mystery. It's 2012 now, almost 2013 next month. So I was confused by the type of computers Bullock had. Especially all those discs. Ordering dinner and having it delivered by computer? The first time I watched it, ages ago, I really liked the film. But this time, not so much. I'm no computer geek, and don't need discs for much of anything. Already the computer tells me to upgrade, and I haven't been using this latest one very long.Anyway, though I've seen the story, it still gave me a good mystery, even though it began to get weird when in one scene after another nobody, not even the police tried to check her story, except on a computer. It would have been so easy.Angela's mother is in a home suffering from Alzheimer's Disease and doesn't know her. But the hospital staff she's in would have had to met her to admit her and give follow ups on her condition. I know this to be true, because my mother was also in a hospital for Alzheimer's Disease. The other thing is that once she realized her identity was stolen, she went about trying to help herself in the wrong way. When she first got home and her home was for sale, and her name was changed, she tried to figure things out for herself, when instead she should have gone straight to the police and told them what happened to her on her vacation. In fact, since her name was changed before she left her hotel, she could have told them that part as well. In fact, she should have gone to the police before going home! She must have suspected something going on after her experience with that stranger she met. Then while trying to escape from him by boat she was in a wreck. She apparently was rescued, and and spent time in the hospital for several days. So, that story could have been checked by telephone. Why not call police from the hospital and tell them what happened to her? I think she would have had a much easier time of it had she gone to some of these places for help. Computers were not the only thing cops used back then. How about a telephone call and a visit to the hospital her mother was at? The girl was pleading for help, and I for one, think they would have tried.Anyway, as the movie went on, my husband and I, having seen the film before kept coming up with ideas where she went wrong and got herself into so much trouble. Also, how can you believe that the place where she worked by computer never saw her in the flesh, never met her? That too didn't add up. I know people who can work at home on computers, but they have to come to work sometimes. Apparently, this firm never saw her once. I think if you've seen the film by DVD as I have in the past, you could come up with a lot of ideas Angela never thought of.

I gotta give this movie Five Stars. I'm the 949th person to review it and I'll go into details in the next paragraph.I first saw this movie on videotape at my girlfriend's house in 1998. I missed it in theaters but in the 22 years since I last saw the film I realize I'd forgotten most of the film! Yah, it's true. While I remembered the basic gist of the film the specific nuances of the plot had eluded me. This made watching it on DVD all the more special. I like how this role was made for a woman. Sandra Bullock is the girl next door and comes across as smart, savvy, tenacious and intelligent. All of these are things that suit her well and kept her character alive throughout an ordeal that would have destroyed most people in life. This film reminds me of an old "Airwolf" episode titled: "The Girl Who Fell from The Sky." That episode dealt with a woman's memory being taken from her with the use of drugs because she witnessed a corrupt Senator involved in illegal arms deals with "terrorist killers." Her background was substituted with that of a prostitute and drug addict. In this case, Bullock's character comes into custody of a disc that allows one to access thru a backdoor into sensitive systems in the Gregg Microsystems database called Gatekeeper (Similar Company Name To The Now Defunct Sun Microsystems).On vacation in Mexico, Angela Bennett meets and falls in love with a handsome and dashing man but all is not as it seems as the man, Jack Devlin, is a hit man intent on retrieving the disc she has in her possession as well as taking her life. Devlin underestimates Bullock. Had he simply slain her on the boat instead of having sex with her, Gregg Microsystems, his employer, might well have succeed in their nefarious plans, but instead Angela Bennett (Nee Ruth Marx) was set on the world. Nothing could stop her in the end. The following paragraph is a paraphrase from Leonard Maltin's Review.Bullock plays a mousy, vulnerable computer whiz. When bad guys need a disc she possesses, they stop at nothing--including deleting, then manipulating her identity on official computer records. Anyone who's ever seen a real thriller will be ahead of this story at every turn. Maltin gives the film a Two and a Half Star rating out of Four Stars. That translates to Three Stars out of Five. I give it Four and a Half Stars out of Five. I liked Bullock's plucky character and wish she'd done a sequel to this film As a result, I'm going to have to buy the sequel and view it for myself. Buy this movie and you won't be disappointed. Is it the best thriller of all time? No, but it is still quite an enjoyable yarn. See the spot where Bullock sleeps in her car. Bought to replace a vhs tape that quit working. Enjoyed the movie and had no problems with it

I enjoy Sandra Bullock and this is good movie with suspense and just wholesome.

1995? was it really that long ago when I fell head over heels for Sandra Bullock in THE NET? Yeah, well, the film is as dated now as am I but survives as an example of a great - repeat, great - performance in a movie that’s as far from great as you can get. Script needs a rewrite? Or two? Or three? Or more? Hitchcock might have made something of it but Irwin Winkler as director shows why he is widely known as a producer. Yet Bullock overcomes the whole mess and is absolutely convincing throughout as a woman going through one holy hell of paranoia that builds, builds, builds. Sadly Bullock’s career since THE NET and 1995’s WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING has been checkered. Those two films remain primo. Rest have just been paydays. Okay, a girl has to make a living in the capitalistic paradise known as Hollywood..

On holiday in Mexico, she arranged, she meets a dashing fellow IT worker and she is swept over by him (Jeremy Northam). It follows he's been monitoring her and knows everything she has communicated with, including family history, He gets angry and wants this floppy and is willing to kill her for it. She escapes and is in hospital for a few days. Back home her identity has been stolen. She is terrified. Her medical and criminal records, her bank, and her home have been corrupted and hijacked. She is on the run and she has very few friends. What happens next?* CommentaryThis film has some tasty Power PC Apple hardware and a great OS which looks authentic for the time. The film flows well and I am told that the total paranoia-inducing side is impossible. and the work she does, in reality, isn't hard to do. The male lead is good support to the lead actress. The film is great fun and I have seen it many times and each time it's enjoyable. The way out of corrupting records on a mainframe would not work as they would have backup systems in place to recover these files. And finally. her mother suffering from a mentally degenerative condition is not accurate as this person would swear profusely, so this is edited out.

Top notch thriller with Internet aspects to it. With Sandra Bullock absolutely lovely as the heroine. Jeremy Northam is excellent as the lead male. One of my all-time favourite films. Effortlessly entertaining and endlessly enjoyable. Can be watched and rewatched over and over again and it never gets tired ever. A truly, genuinely well done film with a strong performance from Ms. Bullock. Might be lacking in the explosions area but it more than makes up for that with a tense cat and mouse chase film. (I just remembered that there IS an explosion) Once again this film is wonderful mostly because of Sandy Bs acting and presence. I cannot recommend this film highly enough. But I can try.

Are you after the latest in computer technology? This film has it all, 3.5" floppy discs and the very latest in DOS... but seriously, this is another great Sandra Bullock film so what more could you want? Please note that her only film that I didn’t enjoy wasn't set on Earth (too stressful for me, not that it wasn’t good.)Not sure why I only gave it four stars so corrected to five.

How life was back in 1995!!!Macs were used as the technology throughout this film when it came to the portrayal of PCs, viruses, hacking etc.Brilliant movie too, Sandra is great and it's just a lot of fun over plot lines that actually are more likely to happen in this day and age rather than the mid-90s! When you look at what governments around the world do hacking into each other's systems, this film is more accurate then you'd like to think!!

And exciting film! Great entertainment with a very relevant theme: how what the computer says becomes fact... very much like the DVLA in the UK which cancels around 10,000 (!) driving licences a year in the UK through computer errors, yet the law -which they of course make themselves- says that their records are final. We were warned my Ms Bullock years ago this would happen!!
