I've read complaints about the difficulty in winning races, the lack of online play, etc. Ignore it all. It's BS. This game is probably going to end up being one of the best purchases I've ever made for the PS3. I first turned the game on around 12AM one Friday, and before I turned it off, the sun began to rise outside. That's how much fun I was having playing this title. I want to address the people who say it's impossible to win a race--not true! I won my very first race. Why? Maybe I'm just that damn good. Or, maybe it's because I adjusted the controls before I played. Yes, the driving controls are easily adjustable before you first race. When I first started controlling the car in the beginning of the game, the gas and brakes were operated by the Right Analog Stick; up for gas, down for brakes. That felt awkward and seemed stupid to me. So I went to tthe controll settings and made it so that the gas was R2 and brakes were L2; more like traditional racing controls. Had I continued to play with that Right Analog Stick, I'd probably lose every race, too. For a game as old as it is, the graphics are excellent. I think most who complain about the graphics have been spoiled by next-gen games that look super-real, and that's why they take Midnight Club: Los Angeles for granted. The cars I have driven in the game, so far, handle very well. I've read complaints about not being able to make turns on tight corners and not seeing turns until it's too late. Again, if you know how to drive video race cars in the first place, you should not have a problem. There's going to be some drift action that might throw you off at times, but that's part of the game. I also read in another review that it's impossible to run the computer's cars off the road--not true. That's one of the more fun strategic elements in this game. You can do pretty much anything--sans shooting--to win. The storyline is cool so far, as I haven't really played as much as I wish I have. But what I've seen has been enjoyable. The story is moved along simply by racing in your car; which was odd at first, because at times I wanted to press the Triangle button, jump out and grab another ride. It feels very much like you're playing GTA, until you realize that you can't get out and shoot up your opponent's car when you lose a race. I could go on and on about how great this game is, but the bottom line is that it's a great purchase at its current price. You will not be dissapointed. Unless you don't know how to race. Review: Midnight Club at it's best - I've owned several versions of of Midnight Club. The game has always had the same idea: open world, various race types that have you moving from point to point to earn cars, reputation and money. The graphics are okay, not great, but the cars look good and that's the most important thing. The soundtrack is amazing. Here are some additional pro's & con's. Pro's: Rockstar - the style in anything they touch is amazing. The soundtrack, environment and characters are fun and interesting. Handling - All of the cars feel good and rarely do you feel like you lost becuase the controls were not responsive or too twitchy. Cars - There are a wide variety of cars that require a lot of time and work to unlock. They are highly customizable and it's fun moving up through the ranks to faster and faster cars. Con's: Framerate - there are times where it dips, and there are times when it stops. That is why I gave it 4 stars. Occasionally I've thought my PS3 froze, after a few seconds, the game starts again. I've never seen this before on any game that I own or any game my PS3. Unfortunately, when you're going 175mph and you just stop and start, you will crash. Rubberband AI - Although it's nice to know you're never truley out of a race, it can be maddening to see a competitor spin out behind you at the beginning of the race only to blow by you at the end when you've driven flawessly. MC probably has the best rubber band AI I've seen implemented. You can put some space between yourself and your competitors and if you race really badly, you will lose, BUT, there are times when you should win, only to lose on a fender bender with the finish line in sight. City Map - when not racing, the map is awesome. It's easy to navigate and locate challenges or missions. During races, it's terrible. And so much the maps, but the lack of checkpoints on the map for most races. Memorizing L.A. is part of getting good at the game, but as you progress and the AI gets tougher and tougher, you have to pause and make sure you don't miss a turn or shortcut, becuase the AI most certainly won't. In future games, I hope Rockstar adds more race markers so you can focus on the game in front of you and not the map. All in all, this is the best version of Midnight Club yet, and at the reduced price, there is really no reason to pass if you are a fan of arcade racers.
