This is a pants-type "horse riding" Hakama ("Umanori-bakama") There are two kinds of Japanese Hakama: the "horse riding" type (Umanori) and the "paper lantern" type (Andon). On the external side they look the same, but the difference is inside. While the Lantern Hakama has no sewings on the inside and it's shaped like a long skirt, Horse riding Hakama is divided in the internal part, so it's shaped and worn like pants. This characteristic makes the Umanori Hakama easier to wear and walk. * In order to choose the right size, we recommend that you choose the most fitting. "under the string" length. "Under the string length" is the length from the bottom of the front string/belt to the hem of the Hakama. Lower the tape measure vertically from the hip bone and measure the actual size up to the ankle (please measure on the side of your body).

For proper training get the size smaller than the height chart says.
I was stepping all over mine during training and am now having to go to the expense of getting them taken up. Also, the tab in the back came loose the first time I used them, that will have to be put back on better as well.Other than those items, delivery was quick and the material seems to be of good quality.

Great quality, great material, wonderful craftsmanship.
Ordered based on the size chart. A bit too big for me. A size smaller would have been fine. Not their fault. I'm built much bigger in the muscle and upper body area than most men my size (5'10.5", 275 pounds). But the material is tough, the pleating is very accurate and double stitched, the belts are long enough to properly wrap and tie Japanese style, the backboard is firm, and I am very pleased with this purchase. I will be ordering another in the next smaller size and will report how it fits.I'm going to keep this one, hem it, and use it as well.
