Does the the thread tube have a weld on it so it don’t spread wider over time?

No, it's formed from one piece. For it's intended purpose I don't see why it would spread open because it's for washing windows not an ice scraper. So far mine is holding up as new. The metal is rather thin. Hopefully mine will be OK, if not a hose clamp would work to close the gap.
