Can you dye these? Thinking of tie dying them

Not good for tie dye. Too loosely woven. Scratchy.

Are these medium weight, fairly tightly woven & highly absorbent true flour sack towels, or are they loosely woven thin, cheese cloth or gauze-like?

They are as you asked, they are medium weight, well woven and absorbent. they are not cheese cloth or gauze like or I would have returned them. I like having these to dry my dishes, not to leave them wet.

Has anyone ever used as a burp cloth?

I dont think its soft enough or absorbent enough for burp cloths.

Teacher here and this fits my budget for all my students. Using these for a holiday parent gift. Should I wash first before using fabric paint?

Yes I would. They Shrink a tiny bit but probably also have a sizing on them that will cause the paint to not stick as well. I would not use fabric softener either.
