does the lid have a seal to help protect from breakage?

No seal. I have three different sizes . All are very nice and heavy and do a fine job of sealing without rubber seals. Who likes washing rubber seals anyway? There have been no concerns with breakage. Love them !!!

Since these jars are not airtight, is it a bad idea to buy these to store flour and sugar in?

We store flour and sugar in our canisters with no problem--that's what we bought them for. The lids are heavy, as are the jars themselves.
