The writing has got better...
Before I write this review, I think I'd better state my position on The Twilight Saga. I LOVE the books but I am well-aware that they are not examples of quality writing. I like the atmosphere, the plot, the characters. I do not like the way they are written and do not consider Ms Meyer a good writer. I would have rated all 4 books as 5 stars for enjoyment and 3 for writing. Hasn't stopped me reading them over and over, so she has got something right and I acknowledge that. Just wanted to be clear that as a fan, I see the flaws of the series and do not give it praise where it's not due.So, with that out of the way, Bree Tanner. I was always going to buy it, because I expected more of the same things that I enjoyed from the other four books. Well, I was right but I got all that and more. The quality of the writing has seriously improved! The word choice is better, the flow is better, the characters are more fully fleshed out. A bonus that I wasn't expecting at all! Before I started reading, I wondered whether knowing Bree's fate (from Eclipse) already would spoil it for me. It didn't at all. If anything, it made me more engaged with the story. I really wanted her to make the most of her "short, second life". It is all told from Bree's point of view a short while after she has been turned into a vampire against her will. She is with all the other newborns but she is sitting back, keeping out of trouble, trying to get a sense of what is happening to her. We meet Riley and get a better feel for his character. We also meet two of the other newborns, Diego and Fred, both of whom end up being important to Bree's attempt to survive. Their characters are quite a highlight. Diego and Bree are somewhat thrown together and tentatively explore their doubts about Riley and his motivations.Without spoiling the plot, here's what I liked about the story:1) Bree is not at all what we thought when we met her briefly in Eclipse.2) We find out a lot more about what it's like to be a newborn (puts Breaking Dawn and Bella's experiences into better perspective)3) We find out what the newborns did and didn't know before they went into battle4) We find out exactly what Victoria and Riley were up to when they were out of the picture in Eclipse.5) We find out what the Volturi were thinking during the newborn problem and then the battle.6) We find out more about the battle. That and the fact that I just really liked Bree herself, made this short novel into a winner for me. I read it in 2 hours and really enjoyed it. Obviously, if you don't like the saga and didn't enjoy Eclipse in particular, you won't like this!

I was immersed in Bree's savage and unfortunate second life
The very first thing you will read when opening The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner is "Fans of Twilight will be enthralled by this riveting story of Bree Tanner". This statement is true, and true for more people than just Twilight fans. In the pages of this book, I did felt enthralled, fully immersed in Bree's savage and unfortunate second life. I could relate to her character easily and therefore felt more heart-ache when she died. The other characters in the book are detailed and all of them mysterious. We are given a brief outline of what Bree's former life was like and this very lack of detail arouses a curiosity that will never be fully satisfied, her lack of thought or emotion shows that Bree does not care for her human life, that her new vampire life is all she knows and all she is interested in.The interaction between the character Diego and Bree is so normal, so fluent and maintain such a typical conversations between two teenagers, that being a teen myself I could believe it, I could laugh at it.Although the book is short it holds suspense, it keeps us waiting for what seems like an eternity when you're reading it, the constant feeling of being on edge is maintained almost throughout the entire book which holds us as readers captive, it keeps us reading and waiting, chewing our fingernails in anticipation and fear of what will happen next. The Short Life of Bree Tanner, however short is one of the best books I have read in a long time, it gives us an insight into what being a new born is truly like, something that the Twilight saga discusses but never fully portrays because none of the characters that we get to know are normal new borns, and of course Bella and Renesmee are far from the average new borns. Bree is that normal sort of new born, it gives us as readers a sense of normality that we were not exposed to within the Twilight Saga.

Not squeal worthy, but worth the read.
For a while now, I've been wanting to read The Short Life of Bree Tanner. If you've read Stephenie Meyer's last book in her Twilight series called Eclipse, you know then about Bree, right? At the end of the book Bree makes a brief appearance, and nothing is really said about her. Well, this novella is about Bree and her life as a newborn vampire.*Spoiler Alert*Bree is a runaway teenager in Seattle, Washington who gets turned into a vampire when a good-looking stranger by the name of Riley, offers to feed her. Bree ends up in a dark room with "her" as Bree's new coven is known to call Victoria because they don't know her name or who she is. Victoria turns Bree to add to the army of newborn vampires she's creating so they can distract the Cullens while she goes after Bella and kills her.Riley is the leader of this new coven and he keeps them ignorant. Most of the newborns-except for Bree, Diego, and Fred-are idiots. Although I liked Diego's character, I have to admit, I thought he wasn't very smart with a decision he made.Speaking of Diego, let's talk about him for a minute . . .At the beginning of this book Bree is out hunting with a couple of numbskulls from her coven. The third guy, though, Diego, is logical, considerate, and a thinker. At first Bree is suspicious of him because he's actually talking to her and is nice (she's not used to somebody being kind to her without having an agenda behind it). But eventually she lets her guard down with Diego. They become "secret" friends because they don't want anybody in the coven, especially Riley, to know. It's not safe. Both Bree and Diego know Riley isn't telling the group the truth about their new existence and what's really going on. However, despite knowing these things about Riley, Diego still feels some sort of loyalty towards him, which makes me want to slap him upside the head. And due to this "bromance" Diego seems to secretly have going on with Riley, he makes a poor decision that frustrates me.He should have listened to Bree.Anyway, my favorite character is Fred. He has the special ability to repel people away from him by releasing an awful smell that makes people gag when they go near him. So nobody messes with him, including Riley. They leave Fred alone and because of that, Bree sits by Fred so nobody can harm her. Bree retches at times, but the smell doesn't bother her after a while. Bree notices that Fred is observant and doesn't trust Riley as well. She's right.Towards the end of the book, Fred talks to her when their group prepares to take off and fight the Cullens. Fred hangs back, tells Bree he's bailing and invites her to come along, offering to protect her as well. Of course, Bree doesn't go because she wants to find Diego. Fred understands and tells Bree he will wait for her for one day. He tells her the location and he hopes to see her soon. And that is that.Fred takes off because he's a smart M-effer and Bree follows the group to her own death.I knew what Bree's fate would eventually be before I picked up this book, because I read Eclipse, but I wish she would have been spared. I liked her character. But it is what it is.I give The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, three stars because it was an okay book. I found it kind of mundane, and I didn't care for the abrupt ending. However, I'm glad I bought it and was able to meet this lone vampire and see her world through her eyes.
