Beware of fake book sellers !
Firstly about the book, I like this book a lot, we get intuitive exploration of concepts, well written, beautiful problems and examples, good for self study. I have seen this material through PDF.Since I liked this book, I wanted a physical copy and ordered the book when I saw a big discount. I am always doubtful about such a situation when it comes to books particularly publications from other countries whose books are usually costly and there is no Indian edition available. I have been cheated 2 times initially and caught 1or 2 more times successfully when the seller sold me a fake book. So I was sceptical and ready to test the book once I get it.After receiving the book, I checked the original book specifications (usually present in the publishers website or on “Amazon.com”where the usually sell the original ones) like the book dimensions, number of pages, weight of the book, pages, margin and print quality etc.For this book I received1) original dimension was 14 x 1.5 x 22 cms but the fake had 18 x 3 x 24 cms.2) weight was off by 130 grams3) ISBN numbers at the back bottom of the cover was slightly blurred along the edges (originals will be sharp, I once had a book whose logo of Springer slightly blurred)4) the bottom margin size was too low inside the book for the pages.5) It missed 1or 2 initial opening pages of the book6) the fabric attached to the hardcover at the corner was just like the one i saw in the previous fake book, it had black and white pattern.7) on the side of the book, we can see diagonal cut marks like it’s been done on some cheap cutting machine, these marks wouldn’t be there for an authentic book.8) The print of lines on the back cover slightly went on the lowered/ embossed thick margin on the right. These things made me conclude that it must be fake.I hope this helps others. Please check for authenticity of your books.

Challenging + Amazing
I’m reviewing this book from the perspective of a (business) Data Scientist. The math is often way over my head (and need), but I’m a huge fan of simulations and R.This book covers lots of simulations (Monte Carlo, Bootstrapping, Markov Chains …). I find that bootstrapping and permutations are rarely covered in traditional statistics books. That’s sad. By using R, I believe that it’s relatively easy to learn. See also “Statistical Inference via Data Science.”Personal highlights:Pages 11/31/42/138: the parts of random sampling with replacement (bootstrapping, which is a variation of a Monte Carlo simulation) are lucid, beautiful, and often combined with excellent samples in R code.Page 457: loved the part on the limitations of sampling and alternatives.Page 484: simulating pi with a Monte Carlo simulation in R. How cool is that?Page 559: excellent explanation of the Poisson process with samples in R.If you’re in Data Science and want to push your math skills, this is definitely a great book.FrancoPS: Several parts reminded me of “Introduction to Data Science,” which was also written by a Harvard professor. In my view, both authors are academic rock stars. What a privilege to be able to learn from them.
