Footwear Design (Portfolio Skills: Fashion & Textiles)

I was more than pleasantly surprised with this book when I received it. The book's contents were certainly not detailed properly in the synopsis on Amazon.I find it to be an excellent reference point for all budding footwear designers.It shows the history of footwear, design techniques, how to research and lay out a collection.I am so happy I bought this book and intend to divulge all its contents. I can see I am going learn many secrets about footwear design that will make me a better footwear designer. Please note that this book is more for footwear design than the actual construction. Although it does briefly demonstrate the use of a shoe last and how a pattern is laid out, it doesnt really give pull out sections on design patterns for shoes. You need a pattern cutting book for shoes for that one. However if you want to learn about footwear design itself then this is your manual of choice!

I loved this book! It was very informational and had a lot of great ideas and tips. Granted, I’ve only seen two shoe design books but this was a great one for me to pick up and start with. Has info on different types of leather and materials used for shoes as well as its prosperities. Had design ideas. Interviews with people in the industry. Illustration tips and templates. Love this!!

It's pretty comprehensive and detailed about design process. It shows the skills and the methods pretty much as same as schools. Many design books are so theoretical that you need too read a lot of content and get bored soon. But the book is practical and not too theoretical. It simply illustrates what you should do to design a shoe from the start to the end. It's better than I expected. I think it's pretty useful.

great read love crafting this is another off shoot from sewing fabrics to learning how to sew leather it has proven to be invaluable information to carry on to the next project in mind.

Bought this after seeing it displayed in my favorite show workshop. It is very informative, inspiring and has great pics. I haven't read many other guides on making shoes but this seems like a greta intro to show making and footwear design. Would make a great coffee table book as well as reference guide.

really lovely comprehensive book! Very clear, with a lot of case studies very useful to understand shoe world from hand making to sketching to create a portfolio. Each chapter, simple, clear, and full of interesting information. Suggested for whoever is interested to start a carrier on shoemaking of shoe fashion design.

I think I totally misunderstood what this book was meant to be about when I purchased it. Its basically a book for aspiring older school kids or those just entering college/university and are thinking about working in the shoe industry. There are many case studies of several shoe makers however the only one in the book I've ever heard of is Stuart Weitzman and you can probably find more info on him by searching online rather than reading the one page summary printed in the book. Questions they ask shoe designers to answer are things like 'What are your plans for the future?', 'What do shoes signify for you?', 'Why feet and footwear?', 'What advice can you give a footwear design student who is interested in your field?', 'What is the best way to learn about color?' To me the introduction for this book should read 'so you're thinking about getting a job in the shoe industry and really don't know anything about it? Well have a read of this book to give you some idea's'. In the books defence, a positive is that the pages are made of thick sturdy paper which may explain why its over-priced. If you can pick up this book for under $10 its probably worth buying. I donated my brand new copy away to my local library as its of no value to me. I hope some school kids can enjoy it.

My teenager who loves shoes was fascinated by the process by which shoes are made. This was a great book to educate her and to inspire her if she is interested in designing and making shoes.

Very useful book to learn about the history and the construction of shoes. It doesn't get into the details of it but it gives you a good understanding of the design process. The only thing that I didn't like is the A4 size. But this is a personal preference and doesn't affect my review.

Good for forecasting

Good format. Illustrative pictures. Authoritative information. It is a compulsory requirement for my Customer made Footwear course at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology TAFE.
