Sound Doctrine at its best
Very readable, yet a through treatment of core doctrines of the Christian faith. Much needed for today to keep us from falling prey to false doctrines and teaching

Anchor of faith
I started reading MLJ in 1981. Since then I thought I had bought and read every book that had come out of MLJ's ministry but I was wrong. Somehow I missed this tome, and like all MLJ's books, is a treasure. Although it has been described as a book on systematic theology (there were actually 3 books), it reads like a Bible Study, which is exactly what it was. I thought only MLJ's pulpit sermons were published, but from what I read in the introductory chapter. this book grew out of Friday night bible studies that MLJ conducted in a hall in Westminster Chapel but then moved to the Chapel itself, from whence he preached his sermons on Romans. I've have read the first 2 chapters, and it is typical MLJ - except that he wasn't doing a verse by verse exposition. It is more topical and, as always, bible-based through and through. If you are looking for discussion of philosophers through the ages, you would do better elsewhere. I have had my share of reading those but I have ever and always learnt more from the Doctor over the years. This is a great book to read and to ponder. You feel that firm anchor whenever you read him, and this is no exception here. The book looks good on your shelf too though I don't think the Doctor would approve if that is all you are going to do with it.

All three volumes are really there!
It is so good to have all three volumes in one Kindle edition. However, Crossway made a mistake with the Table of Contents. If you go to the Table of Contents on the Kindle Menu, the Table of Contents only gives you the TOC of the first volume on "God the Father" and "God the Son". The other volumes on the "Holy Spirit", "The Church and Last Things" are included in the Kindle edition, but you need to know where to look. I recommend you bookmark the following:God the Holy Spirit (Kindle Location:5598)The Church and Last Things (Kindle Location: 9779)The TOCs for those volumes are at Location 5599 and 9780 respectively. The only other slight drawback about this Kindle edition is that you can only adjust the font size, but not the font type. It isn't that pleasant to look at, but for such great content, I can deal with it.

Great book concerning Biblical doctrine
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning more about the key doctrines of the Bible. Mr. Lloyd-Jones does a wonderful job working through each doctrine and tying them neatly together. I appreciate the fact that the author often shares the fact that some things are inexplicable, but does his best to help the reader come to a point of understanding. This book has definitely helped me to better understand the Word of God and has been a blessing to read.If you are looking for "Cliff Notes" type of overviews of doctrine, this is not the book for you. Mr. Lloyd-Jones is meticulous in his detail and often works things out and then revisits them again for good measure. This book is not a short read by any stretch of the imagination.I would also recommend Mr. Lloyd-Jones' book covering the Sermon on the Mount. It is perhaps the most eye-opening book that I have read concerning the teachings of Jesus Christ and will leave you with much more understanding and spiritual growth than when you started.

What the current church needs to read over and over!
This is classic Lloyd-Jones in systematic form. This book is a great blessing to the church, and those who are familiar with Dr. Jones will not be disappointed.I found his work on the various doctrines of grace to be some of the most succinct and clarifying remarks on the subject. As a reformed churchman, when I read his work on depravity, election, grace, etc., I have this moment during the course of reading where I am like "ahh this is why I love and believe reformed theology is truth." Dr. Jones does that to complex theology!I also found his work on eschatology to be refreshing. When the current test of orthodoxy in most of America is one's adherence to pre-trib rapture theology, it is nice to have a nice, solid exposition from an old school churchman who was not a dispensationalist.Get it, read it, and enjoy!

The first two volumes were well worth the third.
Any of God's people would profit from a reading of the first two volumes of this set. I found myself highlighting page after page and telling friends and family about every insight I encountered at every opportunity. What distinguishes this treatment of theology from others I have attempted to read is the fact that the author presents his material as a pastor to a congregation rather than as a textbook to a seminary class. Five stars for the first two volumes.I am absolutely positive volume three is every bit as good as the first two, unless you are a dispensationalist. Not that he doesn't make some telling points. I was struck hard by the fact that the doctrine of the rapture of the church had not existed before 1830 and came into being not as the result of careful Bible study and exegesis but as the result of a 'revelation' at a prophecy conference. I was thinking there really might be something to his school of eschatology until he began a presentation of the book of Revelation. It's not that I think Dr. Lloyd-Jones is dead wrong; I was so confused by the spiritualizing of absolutely everything that I just gave up all hope of understanding any prophecy under his system.Having said that, I am glad I bought the books; I will keep them and refer to them often and recommend them to others every chance I get.

Great reference.
Great book for understanding Christian doctrines. I read it twice and now use it as a reference. I highly recommend it as it gives you very strong Biblical references to back up the doctrines.

Open it and out pour the blessing!
What an epic journey from the beginning to the end!Three volumes in one and over 900 pages, it surprises even myself to finish the whole book in four months. The things concerning the last days were particularly gripping and I raced to the end for the glorious finish of God's total revelation to us through the Bible. This book does assume a degree of familiarity of the bible in order to get most out of it. Prior to reading this book, I have read through the Bible twice. What has this book done for me then? It helps make sense of the bible. Suddenly things that I kind of know are brought into sharper focus as they are illuminated systematically in the context of God's grand plan for the human race, and as scattered concepts are given their proper relations with each other. Previous confusion or haziness in understanding is being straightened out, which is soothing in itself. When we are reading the Bible, we could be so bogged down by the details of the bushes that we miss the forest. This book gives us the view of the forest, which is breathtaking and awe-inspiring - as one would expect for the work of God.These great doctrines of the Bible are the anchor point for our faith especially in today's confusing and all-embracing and permissible culture. It is important that we know what we are believing and we do not just go by our feelings or (the lack of) experience. This book helps define that bottom line or the core of our faith. Our walk with Christ should involve our whole body - starting with our mind and go down to our heart and soul; we are transformed by the renewal of our minds, so we need to hear the truths. These doctrines, consistent throughout the Bible, form the foundation of how we approach the bible, and in turn underpin our own understanding when we go through the bible ourselves. It will now be interesting for me to go back to the Bible and see how everything comes back to these doctrines, which are in turn well supported by the rest of the Bible.I must also commend the way how Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones presents these doctrines to us. He was a pastor and he never lost that touch and sensitivity as one. I feel so much of his concern and his passion for the well-being of his flocks when he expounded these important truths to us, not to burden us with knowledge, but so that we are blessed, so that we know we are blessed, and so that we are free! His exposition is also helpful in that he sets it in context of different schools of thoughts. In addition to telling us what the doctrines are, the author also takes the trouble to tell us what they are NOT by identifying errors through the Church history. This can only help with our discernment when we have to navigate through different opinions and screen different interpretations in modern days. In this approach, I cannot but feel the author's clarity, sincerity and honesty. His interpretation of Revelation is most convincing among all that I have read. I have always been troubled by Revelation because it is so difficult to understand and its interpretation seems uncertain. Over the years I have read various commentaries on it. However I have never come across the approach used by Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and yet, it makes so much sense! And he does not ask us to take his view but just to consider it among all the others, which he has also outlined. My verdict is that his has virtues that I don't see in others, and is consistent with the rest of the Bible that the Bible is one. His interpretation is one that helps me understand most out of Revelation so far. Yet let's not limit God. He may well be talking in double meaning and as we walk closer and closer to the last day, we may unfold with more certainty of another layer of meaning.Lastly, going through a book like this is vital for us to get a complete view. Why? As Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones has pointed out, some doctrines have been neglected because of their difficulties or reactions to previous errors. Among them are the doctrines of the Holy Spirit and the Last days. I think the author is right. The author also says that it is regrettable that doctrines are not taught at church. Well, from my experience, it has not got better. We therefore have to rely on ourselves to seek to know them and I am grateful for Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones' effort in giving this (loooong) series of lectures which has benefited even the generations to come.

Worth reading
I only heard Martyn Lloyd-Jones a few times. The first time was as a teenager in Swansea, South Wales UK. Standing in a crowded extension hall, the main auditorium being packed. Listening to the audio relay (cutting-edge technology for churches in those days), no visual. He was preaching from Acts 1:8, which records words spoken by Jesus to his first followers following his resurrection. I was gripped by God's Word. Life transforming.Whatever your theology may be, books based on the ministry of this faithful servant of God are worth reading. Including this one. And if it plays it's part in helping you to read the Bible, encouraging you to follow Jesus and to serve him in the power of the Holy Spirit, then it will bear fruit.

Classic Lloyd-Jones
If you already know Lloyd-Jones, nothing will surprise you hear. It's a meaty, but digestible, introduction to doctrine, Bible-based doctrine. Nicely laid out, and Kindle-friendly (although it would have been helpful to have had the indexes to all three volumes set out at the front) each chapter is just long enough to read on a daily basis and provide much food for thought.Young and old Christians will benefit from this. Christianity is more than doctrine - but not less. Having sound teaching presented in order and with great clarity can only be helpful, and Lloyd-Jones was, if nothing else, concerned with how to live the Christian life better. I only wish there were more Kindled versions of his output available!

An easy to read yet comprehensive Summary of Bible Doctrines
If you want an easy to read and yet a comprehensive Summary of Bible Doctrines then you may find it difficult to improve on Martyn Lloyd-Jones' "Great Doctrines of the Bible". The text keeps your concentration and all statements are fully supported by biblical references. Martyn Lloyd-Jones reviews and argues convincingly against the many alternative interpretations of doctrines to those which he proposes are true to the Biblical record. It is a substantial work which requires a fully alert mind and I found that I rarely managed to study carefully more than one chapter at a time. Where possible one chapter each day - if the full content was to be absorbed.
