No attention to detail!
We are now at Series 11 and although it is fair to say ‘none have been as good as Ben Miller in Series 1,’ the standard of acting, dramatic content and even the plot continue to decline with every episode. The setting is a fictional Caribbean island with a small police force consisting of a British Detective Inspector and 3 local police officers (2 sergeants and a constable) plus an ever-present uniformed ‘Commissioner of Police’ (played by Don Warrington). With the exception of a female bar owner, all other characters seem to appear for one episode only.It is a series where we find actors who have not graced our TV screens for several years and who appear as though they are being given one last chance to prove they really can act after all. Sadly, most only show why they have been in absentia for so long. Each episode begins with a mysterious death – and I use the word ‘mysterious’ in a bid to be generous to those taking part. The small police force then investigates the death with constant help and interference from the Commissioner until somebody makes a chance remark. “Of course,” says the inspector as everything now becomes crystal clear in his mind. This is the ‘Light-Bulb Moment’ and he now calls all interested parties together so that he can explain exactly what happened and arrest the guilty party. Each series runs for 8/9 episodes with a new detective inspector each time. There is also a high turnover of the local police officers with none lasting for more than 2 series.’ The Commissioner of Police and aforementioned bar owner appear to be the only permanent residents on the entire island. As a former serviceman, however, I really must express one single factor that is particularly annoying. Anyone who wears medal ribbons will know what each one is for and the order in which they are worn. Medal ribbons are not just a series of different coloured cloths placed above the left breast pocket. Each ribbon is unique in its design and all come with a strict order of wear! It stands to reason, therefore, that anyone holding the silver jubilee medal (celebrating Her Majesty’s 25 years on the throne) and the golden jubilee medal (for 50 years) would wear them in the order they were received. Similarly, any awards for brave conduct which carry post-nominal letters are worn first and those for long-service are worn last. You get the idea. The 4 medal ribbons worn by the Chief of Police, however, are sometimes worn correctly but mostly back-to front. The ribbons are: Queen’s Gallantry Medal, Silver Jubilee, Golden Jubilee and Police Medal (with Nos 1 and 3 having 'very' similar ribbons). Unfortunately, as I say, they are worn in reverse order. If only some of the plots were as exciting…NM
