UK two CD set containing a trio of albums. The Jimmy Castor Bunch featuring The Everything Man. Jimmy Castor was The Everything Man, as he once described himself: "I play the saxophone, keyboards, percussion, I sing, I write the songs, I arrange and produce..." Robinsongs have combined three of The Everything Man's greatest albums: Butt Of Course, Supersound and E-Man Groovin on a double CD. Each of these albums includes classic Jimmy Castor recordings such as 'Bertha Butt Boogie' 'King Kong', 'Supersound', 'A Groove Will Make You Move' and the anthems 'Space Age' and 'Potential'. Plus covers of The Stylistics' 'You Make Me Feel Brand New', The Spinners' 'I Don't Want To Lose You' and Elton John's 'Daniel'. This package also features six bonus tracks including the 12" Version of 'Space Age' and the addition of the bands only Christmas single 'Merry Christmas'.

More than the Boogie!
I have to admit that I'm much like reviewer thingfish33; it also took me over 30 years to discover the genius of Jimmy Castor. I had heard "Bertha Butt Boogie" and "Troglodyte" all those years ago, but pretty much dismissed Jimmy Castor Bunch as a novelty act because of the funny, tongue-in-cheek lyrical content of those hits. A funky Frank Zappa? Interesting, but it didn't strike me as anything substantial. But listening to this 2-CD set --- a collection of three studio albums recorded between 1974 and 1977, plus some bonus cuts --- is another matter entirely. Sure, there are those expected slabs of delicious 1970s funk, but also some very interesting jazz-influenced pieces, plus very sweet and tastefully done covers of Elton John's "Daniel", the Stylistics' "You Make Me Feel Brand New", and the Spinners' "I Don't Want to Lose You." Who knew that this guy was so versatile? The liner notes by Lois Wilson tell us, "Castor never got his proper due as a singer, multi-instrumentalist and funk visionary." Listening to the impressive array of music on this collection one would have to agree with that opinion. Some people in the industry called Castor "The Everything Man" for his ability to do so many things so well: playing sax, clarinet, and keyboards; leading his band; singing, writing, and producing the music. Yes indeed, this guy was a true everything man, but one who also put a lot of craft and quality in what he did. It's never too late to discover these vintage musical jewels!
