A group of scientists are on tropical Solgel Island in the Pacific to conduct weather control experiments. Just before they begin, they find giant preying mantises measuring 25 feet tall called Kamakaras. They decide to go ahead with the experiments, but a malfunction in one of the devices and as a result a radioactive storm that pushes the temperature up to two hundred degrees. The storm also causes the mantises to grow even bigger to 100 feet tall. The mantises then make their way to a huge mound where they uncover a giant egg which contains a young Godzilla, later named Minilla. Eventually, Godzilla shows up and saves his offspring. The rest of the movie features Godzilla taking care of and teaching his young son the skills that will eventually help him to become the new "King of Monsters" as well as fighting the Kamakaras and a giant spider named Kumoga.

Godzilla and his son
Coming on the flame sof "Godzilla versus the Sea Monster," this film adds a new touch to the Godzilla movie franchise. The addition of Minilla, baby Godzilla makes "Son of Godzilla" a family-friendly movie. The plot involves another island, Sollgel on which a group of UN scientists led by Dr. Kusumi (Tadao Takashima) are conducting weather alteration experiments. The scientist are intruded upon by a meddling reporter, who happens to be a good rifle man and later a Japanese woman named Riko Matsumiya (Bibari 'Beverly Maeda) whose archeologist father iscovered the island, Godzilla's home. When one of their test goes awry due to radioactivity in the area, the island insect inhabitants grow to monstruous size. Among them are a colony of preying manti led by Komacuras who unearth the egg of Godzilla. They break the egg and Minilla emerges. The slightly comical and clumsy Minilla adds a softer touch to the film that does work to a point. Of course, Godzilla arrives to rescue him from the manti, killing all but Komacuras. Later, a gigantic spider known as Kumonga emerges and threatens all. The battle between Godzilla & Minilla against Kumonga is thrilling. The film's producers come up with a creative way to end the movie, setting up a return of Godzilla and son later in the series.

Much better than I remember it
This movie is way better than I remember it. The Son of Godzilla was during the period when Toho went full children’s movie with the Godzilla series. This however is full of monsters and the little guy doesn’t even show up until halfway through. Eventually it does get to some goofy kid stuff like Son of Godzilla playing jump rope with Godzilla’s tail but I can take it.

Just about the "cutest" Godzilla movie I've ever seen.
Ok, so here's the deal. Scientists fooling with the weather create GIANT preying mantis that don't really do much except serve as fodder for Godzilla to train his newly hatched son on. A giant spider DOES give Godilla and his "mini-me" some problems however and the end is one of those "suspended animation" type of closures. This movie is FUNNY. Mini-Godzilla can't blow much fire and ends up with pitiful little smoke rings until his quick-witted (?) father comes up with the idea of stomping on the little guy's tail. THAT produces a satisfactory Godzilla blast and with the two of them directing radioactive flames at their enemies they can't be stopped! This movie is FUNNY and although it suffers from the common "guy in a rubber suit" special effects, it's a must have for those who think these movies have their own specific charm. I remembered this from seeing it as a kid and just had to see what it was REALLY like. Had me laughing and I thought it was a good flick. for what it was.ONLY for those who LIKE Godzilla movies! If you're just looking for a sci-fi creature flick, you might be disappointed!

Not As described
First, I put my feedback on the seller profile "Plenty of Toys" I gave them a negative rating because the disk they sent me was not the Sony Pictures 50th anniversary listed in the description. Instead what I received was what appeared to be an illegal bootleg from China. This copy had no subtitles or menu and was English dubbed only. They did eventually get back to me after I left the 1 star rating. Since they did respond I told them I would edit my feedback. But, there was not an edit option just a "remove feedback" option. There is no way to resubmit seller feedback for this item and I suspect the person who contacted me knew this during our correspondence.I would stay away from this seller for this particular item. After back and forth emails I found out that they don't have the "Son of Godzilla" that is in the description at all. They did, however, offer to give a full refund with return if I removed the negative feedback. I expressed that it wouldn't be worth the hassle to send it back and they then offered to let me keep the disk with a full refund. I declined this as well. I wanted the 50th anniversary copy, but this is what I have so I'll keep it and pay for it.About the disk I did receive: They video quality is actually really good, Which surprised me after seeing the photo copied DVD cover! The sound isn't bad, but I prefer the original Japanese with subtitles and that isn't an option with this disk.

SON OF G ON DVD!!!! A new version in America!
The Columbia/Tristar (SONY) release of SON OF GODZILLA is the "International" version. It is in wide screen. It also has dubbing done in Japan. This is similar to the recent DVD releases of Destroy All Monsters. So it is different from the version most fans grew up with. (The version that had Peter (Speed Racer) Fernandez as the voice of Goro.) The good news is that it is UNCUT and features a 3 min. prologue cut from the american TV version, which features Godzilla frightening coast guard pilots in a tropical storm at sea. Incidently, Tere has always been some confusion over which island is "Monster Island". Well, the original japanese title of Son of Godzilla is "Monster Island's Decisive Battle". So that settles it. Monster Island is Sorgel Island from Son of Godzilla. Im sure this is just a western arguement and every Japanese fan knows Monster Island is Sorgel island.

This is one of those films
That you either love it or you hate it. I always enjoyed watching this one growing up. And honestly I enjoyed the humans in this story. The struggles they were having of being in isolation, dealing with monsters and unbearable weather.

Godzilla is now a Father in this movie and he hears the call of a lone egg on the island that the investigation team are on this
OVERVIEWSon of Godzilla was released in 1967 by this time the Godzilla franchise has slowly changed the monster in question from a driving force of destruction to slowly becoming a “hero” of sorts in the latter movies this started with Ghidorah – The Three Headed Monster onwards till Terror of Mechagodzilla.PLOTThe plot itself is rather progressive in many senses although this movie was made and produced to be my child friendly which in many ways it is. The investigation team who are finding ways to modulate and change the earth’s atmosphere to benefit and cure the world’s lack of food and progressive over population was a very refreshing if not unseen backdrop for the movie itself.Godzilla is now a Father in this movie and he hears the call of a lone egg on the island that the investigation team are on this leads to some interesting and funny encounters with “baby godzilla” whom the big guy takes under this wing these scenes are surprisingly sweet and endearing as deals with the trails and tribulations of parenthood almost shown through the eyes of “baby godzilla” himself with a childlike innocent quality which does reflect the target audience. This movies flows very well with enough plot and exposition between the morality tale of the investigation team, the bounding of Godzilla two his son and the relationship between the reporter and the mysterious girl on the island.SPECIAL EFFECTSFor 1967 the movies special effects are very impressive with a mixture of miniature, matte optical and marionette effects the Kamacuras and the Kumonga are not only worthy and interesting foes but also an impressive use of live-action puppetry. The movie was viewed on a HD TV (the standard 2004 edition upscaled to 1080p) this was an very impressive experience with clear and balanced colours and clear audio.CONCLUSIONThis is a very fun and enjoyable little movie from the Toho team it has the right mixtures of multiple plots, interesting ideas, impressive effects the introduction of three new monsters (including “baby godzilla”) and taking the big guy himself progressively in new directions – highly recommended.

horrible release
wrong aspect ratio: not 4:3, but 4:3 letterbox (16:9 nicht anamorph)wrong soundtrack: no 5.1 (kein deutsch 5.1)cut version, no 90min running time, just 79min (gekürzte Version)horrible picture (schlechtes Bild, keine Schärfe, kein Kontrast)Film selber ist auch nicht besonders im vergleich zu einigen anderen Godzilla Filmen die mehr an Handlung und Story haben
