What's an estimate on the time it takes to build a first invention?

We estimate 30-60 minutes per challenge. I usually have kids start with Challenge #3: "Build a machine that draws curvy lines." You will find step-by-step instructions for that Challenge on page 14 of the printed guide that comes with the Catalyst. We also have a video that shows the steps on our website. Once Tinkerers have completed Challenge #3 they'll have a good understanding of the components in the kit and how they work, and can invent their own solutions to the other Challenges. Or make up their own unique inventions!

Is this something that can be taken apart, so new things can be built?

Yes! The kit comes with 10 Challenge Cards, each of which presents a challenge that can be met with the parts in the kit. So after you have completed Challenge 4 (Make a ride for one of your toys) you can take it apart and try Challenge 8 (Invent a robot that moves without wheels). One of our favorite sayings is "If you have parts, make something. And if you have something, take it apart!"
