Best 4x4 book on the market!
I am a professional 4-Wheel Drive Instructor and this is the number one book I recommend to my clients. I cannot say enough about this book. Whether you are a beginner or a trail-hardened expert, this book offers something for everyone at every level. It is down-to-earth, easy to read, thorough, and applicable to all types of four-wheel-drive vehicles and terrain. As your skills and experience increase, you can go back to this book and glean more than you did the last time you read it. Even if your 4-wheel-drive is a push-button-do-everything-for-you variety, you will at least be able to understand WHAT your vehicle is doing FOR you.The author's style is professional, yet personal; thorough, without putting you to sleep; respectful of trails, vehicles and other wheelers, without being preachy. Very helpful and descriptive charts, diagrams, and photos. My only complaint is that Jim did not write this book sooner!

A lot of info, maybe not all useful
This is a good book. It contains a lot of information, although not all of it is useful. This is a great book for someone just getting into four wheeling. My personal thoughts are that this book should have been Jeep or LandRover specific (Those are the authors obvious favorites) instead of trying to be all encompassing of 4x4's. Basically, there was not enought specific information on any type of area or vehicle, and not enough gereral information. The author seemed stuck somewhere inbetween, making this book not really good for either use.I did read the book cover to cover, so I guess it couldnt have been that bad either. I gave it four stars because it did have some info and was a pleasant book to read.

Excellent reference for anyone who drives offroad.
Disclaimer: I've met Jim Allen and had some email correspondence with him over the years. He was also the instructor for a good friends Land-Rover School trip in Colorado (approx.) 10 years ago.I'm an experienced off road driver (4-wheeler?). I bought the book because I knew that with Jim being the author, it would be useful and entertaining and I wanted to read what he had to say. I wasn't wrong. Coinciding with the arrival of this book was the (unexpected) purchase of a new rig--a modern Land Rover to complement my "old school" Series truck. This book definitely helped ease the transition between driving the modern "auto" Discovery and the old manual rig.I don't believe the purpose of the book is to tell you "what truck to buy" or "how to use a specific truck" and so I feel that the criticisms along those lines somewhat miss the mark. The book is intended to explain the "art and science" of offroad driving in general, to provide background information about the activity, and to outline expectations that you should have--and that others will have of you--while participating. I think it does a spectacular job of doing so. Jim's approach is thoughtful and friendly. The photos are (in many cases) worth the price of the book in and of themselves and the diagrams are clear and useful. My girlfriend, who is new to the activity, has placed this book on her bedside table and is also finding it very helpful. I think I'll be able to convince her to take the wheel of our new truck soon--much sooner than if she hadn't been able to read "how to" do it herself! This book has something to offer anyone who is interested in driving offroad and I would consider it a "must" for their bookshelves.

Great Book. Buy it if you are starting out..
I just took a offroad class at Badlands 4x4 north of LA and the instructor, Tom Severin, recommended this book. It really has all the basic s you need and serves as a great reference if you get stuck. Bonus my son loves reading it, cause it has what look like monster trucks. :)

Very nice.
I was impressed by the detailed info in this book and how many areas the author was able to cover. I bought this book while looking for an offroad vehicle to purchase. It really helped me to prioritize and understand all the products a seller might have put in their truck.Well written, great pictures and an overall very cool book.

great book
Great book for a starter. It has good need to know info which will keep you from feeling silly while standing around "talking" Jeep with other gear heads. For more seasoned wheelers this may not be the book for you but still a good read as it covers safety, recovers, how to drive on all kinds of terrain and angles.

great book
This large paperback is a good reference book for any 4X4 fan. I've been off roading for 30 yr. and was impressed by the content and layout, a must for new off roaders.

Errors/ omissions call whole book into question
The book lists the 2021 Land Rover Defender and the 2021 Ford Bronco in the vehicle reviews section… but only captures up to 2008 for the Toyota FJ Cruiser and up to the 2005 Toyota Tacoma? Was this an oversight, or are they truly saying “no comment” on the vehicle years missing?Just received the book today, but now I’m wondering what else they overlooked if they can miss something like that. What other bit of safety related info did they miss? What mechanical details did they overlook or get wrong because they didn’t want to do their diligence?Seems comprehensive enough to earn the “bible” title, but… come on… details matter when it comes to a book like this.

Very good book
This is a great book. Some of this will be common sense but there are some great checklists and interesting info and diagrams. Very American orientated though.

Very technical and deep
A great first buy if you are starting with 4x4'ing. It cover everything with a strong bias for the the american scene of 4x4.
