The standard work on the subject (Shadow cars and Don Nichols)

This must now be the standard work on the subject (Shadow cars and Don Nichols). Written and illustrated by Pete Lyons, probably the best motorsport writer and photographer of the era covered by Shadow's history. Superbly produced, the book contains a highly informative text and and as much human interest, technical and racing detail as anyone could desire. Pete Lyons knew all the people, from Nichols to the drivers and mechanics, and was there for all of the history of the Shadow marque, as both Canam and F1 reporter/photographer for Autosport and Autoweek magazines. It would be almost impossible to imagine how this book could have been better written, illustrated and printed. A tour de force, and the best book I have ever seen on such subject.

poor packaging

The book itself is great, however the package it arrived in did not fully support the book, allowing it to 'rattle around' resulting in small bruising to the corners,

Excellent read

Pete Lyons never fails to produce a great book. For anyone remotely interested in Shadow and their background this is a must read.

Very enjoyable, but just lacks that extra spark, that extra bit.

Pictorially, this book is excellent, a fine record of the marque. Story-wise, I felt that it lacked just a few more pieces in the jigsaw puzzle. The mechanics of the team aren't really mentioned, and that is a large oversight in my view. Key moments aren't dwelt upon either, and that is what I would have liked. An American emphasis is probably another disappointment, being European, but that probably explains why Shadow weren't successful in Formula 1, because the American operation was important to them but was equally a distraction.Ultimately, the book also lacks 'Art'. For example, and pretentious as that may sound, the DN5 F1 model was either just an effective performer or equally one of the most beautiful F1 cars to have graced the grid. Sadly, you won't find this latter point up for discussion. Maybe I'm the only one that thinks that car good-looking!Some of the key moments in this journey are probably not dealt with in sufficient detail for me, which means it lacks a personal touch perhaps. But hey! this is still a 400 page book! It's just that in some ways I don't feel wiser to the degree that I would have anticipated.

Can-Am at it's best

This is the definitive book about Don Nichols and the innovative Shadow Can-Am cars. These were just about the fastest race cars in the world at the time and very innovative. You can almost hear the V8’s bristling with fuel injection stacks like some raucous mechanical porcupine behind the driver. They were beautiful too a Shadow taking Best of Show for Competition Cars at Amelia Island in 2021. A huge and important reference too for those interested in Can-Am and modern-day big bore Vintage racing. F1 and F5000 also covered as well. Highly recommended.🏁

Masterful acct of a forgotten mysterious team / owner.

As usual, well written and engaging text by Pete Lyons, on a unique team owner and perennial underfunded race team(s). Can-Am, F1, F5000, the designers, bio on founder Don Nichols, the cars, triumphs and tragedies.....................it's all laid bare. Reminds me of Chaparral and it's unique cars and owner / designer, albeit, not as successful. Excellent book for $50 CAD.
