I’ve used FTH for years and recommend it. It’s robust. However, being robust, it has a steep learning curve, so do your homework. Any and all programs suffer from the same problem: Evolving software. Whether it is the fault of Windows evolving or this genealogy program evolving, one must do some things to protect your hard-earned genealogy work. 1) Make a regular .GED (GEDCOM) file of your master file. .GED files seem to get around the evolving genealogy software problem. 2) Update your FTH at least every five years. The cost of doing so is small compared to all the hours you have put in, plus there is the added benefit of improvements in the program. 3) Print your work as soon as you can. Paper records do not evolve. A cousin had a very complete genealogy of her matriarchal line in an old Family Tree Maker program which isn’t supported anymore. However, she had printouts of the lineage. It’s taken a couple of weeks, but the lineage has been recovered and in FTH now. Genealogy is a rabbit hole, but a good hobby for which, hopefully, future generations will appreciate your work. Good luck hunting your genealogy!

This program was easy to load on my PC and it easily installed the 15 year old version of my previous file. it was a very smooth transition to the new version.

It was not as it was listed. I had to upload everything to use it at all. Was not for me.

Take a bit of time to get into but good for serious genealogy people

I was really hoping for a software program that was user friendly. This has a learning curve that has kept me up most of the night, swearing at my computer, while seriously regretting my purchase. I know that there are people who love this program, a family member apparently "can't live without it." I really was hoping that it would be more user friendly, AND I really wish that it was aesthetically pleasing, I previewed the photos of the item before purchasing, so, it's not like I didn't know what I was buying. The problem is, its pretty much the only genealogy software program out there, that is compatible with Ancestry and the ability to download your GEDCOM. I found other software programs that looked amazing but the reviews weren't great. When I attempted to download my GEDCOM to this program, there was nothing to show me that it had completed the download. So, I tried again, still nothing. I went to the home page, and it still only showed mine and my parents names, that I entered manually. I tried one last time after ejecting and reinserting the disc. After I did that ALL three downloads appeared! BUT to make matters worse, I have to manually delete over 800 people one by one TWICE! (1600+ ancestors!) Maybe it's user error, but I'm just done for tonight, after spending over 2 hours attempting to get it to show my information. I'm going to bed.

I have a very old version of FTM that won't run on the newer OS like Windows 11. There are probably at least 1,000 family names and years of research entered and don't want to lose that information but make sure the younger generations will have it when/if they are interested. It stated that this program will run on Win 11 and also convert old data files into a usable format. I ordered this thinking there was a good chance it wasn't going to work. Imagine my shock when it did. Of course you have to read the information about how to convert the data to the usable format for this program, which I did. I haven't had a lot of time to explore every function yet to learn how to generate the reports that I intend to print but at least I have the information and a program that works. I actually have 1, 075 names and I was able to print the whole list. I would give more than 5 stars if possible!

I disliked the fact that there isnothing to guide you on how to use the software..I love that I can see my Family tree but can't do anything with it!!!

I wish the program was online. Great database management
