Venta LW45 Comfort Plus Humidifier in Black - Filter-Free Evaporative Humidifier for Spaces up to 645 ft²

This is a review after using this humidifier for two winters. Even though this is very expensive, I am very glad I got it. I have a larger area that I need to humidify in the winter. But I always hated the regular cleaning I had to do with the regular ultrasonic humidifiers to get rid of the mold build up. This is the perfect humidifier for me. On the low or medium fan setting, it is super quiet. On the highest fan setting, you do hear it, but it can empty the tank in about a day. It does work via a humidistat to maintain humidity, but I end up just setting it to keep going since a drier day always comes and sucks the humidity right out of the air. And cleaning is super easy. You do need the Venta additive. But you just rinse out the tank/bottom and the white blade-line insert and then refill with water and some additive. Super quick, with no mess or fuss. On the negative side, this is really, really expensive for a humidifier. To me, I am paying a premium for the ease of cleaning/maintaining the humidifier. I really hate scrubbing the gunk in the ultrasonic humidifiers.

This is a fantastic humidifier. I spent weeks shopping for one, going over the different options of cool mist, warm mist, or wicking (evaporative). I wanted a good evaporative, because they are better, but they are few and far between these days. Having to continuously buy new wicks and having them get gross is annoying too. You don’t have to with the Airwasher! Just rinse it out and wipe off some residue every couple of weeks and use the additive they sell and you’re good to go! There is nothing else I’ve found like it. We got the largest most expensive one (LW45 comfort plus) to take care of most of the house. It says up to 600-700 square feet or whatever, but with the central air constantly moving air around it seems to get most of our 1200 sq ft house. The back rooms don’t get humidified as well, but it’s not bad. Still better than not having one. It’s probably about 5-8% lower on average further away from the unit in the back rooms but that’s still pretty damn good in my opinion considering I’m using it for more space than it’s rated. It works! It says right on the top panel the humidity %, and I was skeptical, even though I thought I could feel a difference. So I got another hygrometer to test and it is the same within a few % in the main rooms depending on where you measure. I have to fill it up about once a day running on level 2 or 3 constantly. It’s very quiet, and in addition to doing its job humidifying, it also doubles as an extra air purifier. No water spraying in the air or white deposits on stuff or needing to use distilled water. Tap water in and you’re good to go. When you dump it out to clean it you’ll see all the crap it picks up from the air. You only need to put in more additive every couple weeks when you clean it because it stays in solid form at the bottom even when the water runs out. It has three levels of operation, and an auto mode and sleep mode. And it will even alert you when it’s time to clean it. The company also offers a professional steam cleaning service you can get done every six months or a year for a charge. Haven’t tried it yet, but I might. They seem like a solid company. And it’s not some sketchy Chinese crap like so much Amazon stuff is. The only issue is the price. As it is mostly plastic, outside of some interior components with the fan and the simple touch screen, I can’t imagine how this thing deserves the $400+ price tag, but maybe the disks in the reservoir are kinda hard to produce. They are very specific in design. I’m guessing they can charge this much because no one else makes humidifiers like this and I wouldn’t be surprised if the disks and the design is proprietary/patented. It’s worth it though to get a humidifier and pseudo air purifier (pseudo because I don’t know how it would stack up against a higher volume HEPA filter) in one that works really well with simple upkeep. If you are worrying you won’t get what you pay for, you will. If you’re thinking this is too expensive, it is. I know that seems like a contradiction…it is. Haha. But seriously it’s a great humidifier. As long as you don’t need the money for rent and buy this instead, you will be happy. If you’re looking for a non-cheapo garbage humidifier that actually works, that doesn’t shoot up water into the air, and you’ve exhausted all the options and are still coming up short on exactly the right one, look no further. This is it. It just will cost you. You get what you pay for though.

UPDATE NOVEMBER 2025: Of the very few "pros" that I've listed for buying this Venta humidifier, I must now remove one of them: cheap upkeep; Since last year, the price for one liter of Venta Water Additive has soared to $35 list, $30 when discounted, and that bottle gets you 9 uses, at an average of one use per week per machine. Here in NYC, I usually have my humidifiers running from early Nov to the end of April, about 6 months, so that's almost 3 bottles which, even at the discounted price is $90 upkeep cost for water additive. I also find the humidifier needs a deep cleaning once during the season, and once before I store it away, and the Venta cleaner is $17 per one use bottle, which brings the total for upkeep costs to $124 per year. And believe me--I have scoured the internet trying to find cheaper alternatives to the Venta additive and cleaner, but of the very few hacks out there, none have worked. And $124 is the annual upkeep cost for just one machine--I'm running 3 of them to properly humidfy a 2BR apartment--2 LW25 models and 1 big LW45. So do the math: it's stupid. UPDATE DECEMBER 2022: So one year after buying my larger LW45 unit, which now lists for an astounding $500, the gear box went bad. A quick search online revealed that this is not an unusual problem with Ventas, which may explain the cut in warranty from 10 years to 2. But even though I'm still under warranty for another year, and even though I have to perform this repair myself, I'm struggling to get the part from Venta. And even in the best case scenario, I will still have to pay $13 for the shipping. I'm now on my fifth email exchange with them because my receipt from Amazon isn't enough! I needed to register the humidifier with Venta, even though nothing in the box makes that clear when you receive it. Plus: the serial number has faded from the poorly printed paper label that's inside the humidifier where--you guessed it--there's constant humidity. So Venta wants to charge me another $25 for the replacement gear box which I then I have to switch out myself. This is AWFUL customer service even for a bargain product, and we're talking about an all plastic humidifier that costs $500. With that in mind, I'm cutting my review from three stars to one--I can't recommend this based on poor reliability and so-called customer "service" that won't honor a warranty with another year left on it. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Over the years, I think I've tried every humidifier technology out there to deal with the dryness in my apartment during NYC winters. I could never get the output volume I needed from various ultrasonics and I hated the maintenance to avoid white dust. I thought an expensive Boneco steam unit started out very positively--but I ran into reliability issues and the boiling of water to produce steam was fairly noisy compared to ultrasonics. The past couple of years, the Honeywell evaporative wick humidifiers have given me good service, but the wicks themselves--at least the Honeywell brand, which I found to be far superior--were not always in stock when I needed them. So this year, I took the plunge and went all in on Venta Airwashers, which use evaporative tech similar to the Honeywell, but don't need replaceable wicks. To properly humidify an average size 2BR apt, it takes one large LW45 Plus unit and two smaller LW25 Plus units. Here are the pros and cons you should know about. CONS It is NOT an effective air purifier. While it's marketed as "washing the air" as it humidifies, leaving the impression that you get two appliances in one as a potential justification for the high price, this is not the case. The Wirecutter has researched and document fairly minimal purifying abilities, certainly nothing close to an actual air purifier, and these findings seem borne out when I rinse the unit for cleaning. The high price has no real justification. The overall build quality and actual parts are very similar to my Honeywell units which were less than one-fifth the price. (And the Honeywell units included a UV light to kill bacteria in the water that the Venta lacks!) The one big difference is that where the fan in the Honeywell pulled air past a large wet wick, the fan in the Venta pull air down and past wet plastic discs that slowly rotate in the water. The discs themselves are not motorized--they're moved by a tiny gearbox attached to the fan motor. Sure the rotating plastic discs are an added cost to manufacture--but FIVE times the price?! Not even close. Venta slashed its previous warranty coverage of 10 years--which at least gave some justification for the high price--to 2 years. This applies to both the newer Comfort Plus units and new stock of the old style unit. Not exactly a sign of confidence in their own product. The Venta is very slow to humidify at first. How slow? The Venta welcome sheet packed in the box tells you to allow 7-10 DAYS... that's not a typo... for air to be properly humidified, which means getting humidity levels between 40-50% Supposedly, once you've reached proper humidification, it will maintain it easily. I haven't owned my units long enough to know, and we're still not in the driest, coldest days of winter. We shall see. If you live in a climate that has a cold winter, I'd say the estimated coverage per unit is WAY overstated. I'm currently in the midst of the coldest, driest part of the NYC winter season--temps in teens and 20s--and I have to keep my three Ventas running 24/7 just to maintain humidity between 30-35% in a 2BR apartment. That's one LW45 Plus and two LW25 Plus, and my square footage is well below the claimed estimated coverage. But even with 3 units running, it never gets past 35%, unless it's a warmer and/or wetter day outside. Wow... with that list of cons, you're probably wondering why I haven't returned my Ventas. Here are the pros, the reasons you might want to buy and keep a Venta. PROS Finally, humidifier maintenance that IS a breeze--refill the water once per day, rinse the discs and bottom "tank" half of the unit once every week-10 days, then add a 3 ounce dose of fairly cheap water treatment when you refill from empty. That's it. I hate the look of having humidifiers in the room all winter, but since it's essential, I really prefer the clean, minimal looking, square box of Venta's design. This is super subjective, of course, but I like that it doesn't look like a humidifier and "disappears" better into the room. Zero maintenance costs other than the water treatment, which you only add during the weekly rinse out and refill. Some of the maintenance chemicals and wicks needed for other humidifiers really add up over time. With the exception of the highest fan speed, it's super quiet. At the highest speed, you're definitely aware of a small fan running, but it's more like white noise. I'd recommend the newer Comfort Plus models over the original units, even with their higher price tags. Their coverage area is higher than the original model, plus it's a real convenience to have an Auto setting that will control fan speed based on how close or far you are to the target humidification. And there's Manual control, too, if you'd prefer that. That's the good and the bad when in comes to Venta Airwashwers. I deducted one star for the inexplicably high price and an additional star for poor performance as an air purifier and slow performance, at least initially, as a humidifier. However, the minimal work and cost for maintenance could make this my favorite humidifier over time. I hope you find this review helpful in making a buying decision for yourself.

The Venta LW25 Comfort Plus humidifier was purchased to maintain the level of humidity to 45% in a room that is about 14 x 14 foot square with 10 foot high ceilings. My wife’s piano is in this room. One wall of the room is open to a hallway leading to the remainder of our first floor. The unit is very quiet in operation, and controls are simple, but the unit will not raise the humidity to much higher than 30%. It just doesn’t have the output necessary for this space. The unit is also very expensive for what you get.

We’ve had this unit for almost four weeks now. Even on mid-speed it is quiet. On the lowest setting, you can’t even tell it’s running unless you get within a few inches of the unit. Humidity in the 800+ square foot open concept area of our home is kept steady and comfortable, and the air is noticeably cleaner. I love the fact that there is no expensive filter to replace, but it is impossible to find the water treatment additive on line. Since Amazon sells the unit, one would expect them to sell related supplies but such is not the case. Hopefully, this will be rectified at some point in the near future. Other than the price which is quite high, we highly recommend the Venta. Construction quality is excellent and far exceeds cheaper PRC built units which rarely lasted more than a year or two. I will try and revisit this review in a year or two to update it on the Venta’s long-term effectiveness and reliability.

We ordered this in Uk , but it arrived with a plug unuseable in the uk. Buying an adaptor is a fire risk and removing the plug nullifies the guarantee apparently . Please help !

Condo air can get really dry in winters in GTA. We have had this running 24/7 for last 10 days and its been constantly between 40-45%. Took 7-8 days to reach the level and now surely can feel the difference. There is no static and its easier to breath especially in the mornings. The max fan setting is lower that the noise of furnace and medium is hardly noticeable in night (we keep it at med). It is quite pricey for a air washer. It takes a alot of water but again, we feel its worth it. However should not have been over $500 CAD, lil expensive for sure.

I received and set this up on a Tuesday. I live in a condo apartment with electric baseboard heat. For the first few days I ran the Venta nonstop, at top speed, set at 45%. I have two hygrometers at different spots in my living/dining room and the humidity was barely hitting 30% so I was considering sending it back. On Friday morning I got up and the humidity was up to 36%. On Saturday, it was up to to 38% so I set it to 35% on auto and, according to my hygrometers, it’s maintaining the humidity around 37% which is fine for me at this time of year. There are a couple of downsides. This thing is big and ugly! I wanted a black one but a shipping date couldn’t be confirmed. With all the supply chain shortages at the moment, I decided I’d better go with what was in stock and bought white. It is very noticeable in my living room. The other downside is that with it sitting on the floor, it pumps a lot of humidity into the immediate area. I think my floors are engineered hardwood (just bought the place so don’t know for sure). When I walk on the floor, I can feel that the flooring beside the humidifier is starting to swell. I have no idea if the flooring was maybe installed without proper expansion joints or if this is just too much humidity concentrated near the floor. Something to keep in mind if you have no choice but to keep it on a wood floor. For now, I’ve put it in a different part of the room on a table. I’ve ordered a trolley for it and will probably just end up moving it every couple of days if this continues to happen. It may have been caused because I had it running flat out for four days and it won’t happen again now that I can run it on auto. In spite of the downsides, I’m keeping it. I’ve only needed to fill it once a day after it got up to speed. I bought a 2 gallon watering can and use that to fill it so I don’t need to move the unit. It is extremely quiet, especially on the low speed. The top speed is a bit loud but it doesn’t bother me as it rarely cycles to top speed with where I have it set right now. If anything changes in its performance in the dead of an Ottawa winter, I’ll update this review. UPDATE: I’m afraid the Venta just couldn’t keep up when the weather turned colder here in Ottawa. I was hoping it would humidify my L-shaped living/dining room and galley kitchen, a space of approximately 500 sq ft. I would have been satisfied with a humidity reading of 30% but the Venta just couldn’t come close to reaching that when the outside temperature started to fall. I moved it to my bedroom, which is 14’ x 12’, and it performs quite well in this smaller space. I bought another brand of humidifier for the living/dining room. It is extremely noisy and a real pain to clean but it does humidify better. Even it is struggling today though since it was -18C outside this morning. I think high rise apartments with electric heat are just hard to humidify!
