Great Hard Drive Eraser
I needed a good way to erase many old drives, this really fits the bill. I was using an old PC and a program to erase the drives, I wanted something that was easy and didn't take up much space. It take a while to do a 3-pass DoD erase but I need the data from the company's pc to be totally gone. A 1 tb can take 5-7 hours. I also have it connected to my work PC so I can check the data on it at first. Overall just a good device.

Very useful! Almost perfect!
I'm a big fan of StarTech products. I've been using their adapters for many years. I find their line of secure HDD/SSD erasers to be a little inconsistent. Ideally, I wanted to buy one product that did EVERYTHING and was willing spend more. Unfortunately, I ended up with two products. There were a number of differences between the two products (e.g. the menus, the displays, look and feel, one worked with the IDE to SATA adapter and the other didn't, etc.) The biggest rub on this one was not knowing the percentage complete as it was running. The other product I own (SDOCK1EU3P2) does. In conclusion, this product works well and does a lot (duplication, secure erase, dock, etc.) but I'd still like a countdown to progress for time management purposes. Hopefully in their next product.

Startech - Drive Eraser dock with KN support
I like this Stardock Drive Eraser dock. Easy to use, and always do a greate job. Very good quality also. Its only one thing i didnt like. The eraser dock couldnt handle WD VelociRaptor hard-drive ?The eraser dock become dangerous hot, and couldnt finish the eraser job with WD Velociraptor disks. But the Eraser dock works fine on all other disks.Another thing ... The price is to expensive for many customer. This item could sell much more if the price was lower.I almost canseled my order because of the expensive price, not because of the quality of the product.I hope more people could afford to buy this greate product, and experiance the eraser dock tool on their hard-drives. Blessings from Tony - Norway

Make sure to get a compatible printer
Works great! Love the log function. Would not print to a newer RongTa printer, which I had to return. I never could get that printer baud rate to match (both need to be 9600). As far as I can tell, baud rate cannot be adjusted on StarTech erase machine. I ended up getting a used Epson TM-T20 serial printer on EBay. No USB or Wi-Fi on printer. Don’t need either. There was no need to program printer; worked by just connecting the serial cable. Also, no need to mess with printer dip switches, which the Epson did not have. Make sure the printer comes with a 9-pin serial cable, which is what the StarTech machine requires.

Works great but slow until it doesn't work at all
I had this for a couple of years and while it was extremely slow to erase a drive depending on which method was used, it did a good job and has lots of options on how to erase. However, because of the lack of speed in erasing, I would only use it when I had to document a drive erasure to a client. So it was only used 3-4 times per year... a total of about 10 times. The printing feature is, as has been mentioned elsewhere, outdated since it only works with serial ESC/P printers... these are rare and expensive for what they are... a simple receipt printer but it does act as confirmation of erasure for customers that require that.Anyhow, the reason for the review now and the title of the review "until it doesn't work at all" is because after a few years, I went over to use the device and it just had a "Self-check Faile" on the screen. I contacted tech support and the only answer that I got was "the chipset is defective, if it's under warranty, we can replace it but there is no other repair option".There is no reason for this device to fail... there's no moving parts, so no wear and tear; it's on surge protection, so no electrical surges... it just stopped working. The tech even told me that the MTBF is 8640 hours... that's less than 1 year if it's left on 24x7. That's just not good enough for a device with a premium price tag... and I believe that $267 for a single bay single purpose erase is a premium price.I paid $267 for this device and erased 10 devices - that means that I paid over $26 per device erasing... I will not make that mistake again. Looking for another manufacturer to try out.

Works with receipt printer, so far so good
I've been testing this unit rigorously for about a week. After running about 50 drives through this thing during the past few weeks, I can say that it is worth the money to anyone that has to securely and verifiably erase a large volume of drives. After considering bulkier standalone duplicator / eraser units, as well as software only solutions, I decided on this dock / eraser. I can erase drives without having to have my workstation dedicated to the task as well as use the dock for traditional USB access. I do have a receipt printer connected to this unit and it works flawlessly. Upon a successful wipe of any kind, a receipt is printed detailing the drive model, serial number, capacity, the erase type, and the start and finish times of the wipe. This information is also stored in a log on the eraser dock itself and may be retrieved / reprinted at any time. The wipe receipt even includes a signature line. If you decide to use this dock with a receipt printer, be sure that it's a serial printer (9600 baud, etc) similar to the old Epson POS printers. All things considered, this was a slam dunk of a purchase and I couldn't be happier.
