Beautiful
I admit I haven't read it yet. But it's Mark Kurlansky so I know it is good compelling reading and well researched. The thing I wasn't expecting is that the book itself is so nice! Few books anymore are so nicely and sturdily bound with such fine paper. The text, font, and line spacing make it easily readable for my deteriorating eyes and there are a variety of illustrations of sufficient size.

It is a Complete view Salmon.
I was pleasantly surprise by this book. It covered more than I asked for. A history of the species and salmons meeting with the human species, which for most other life has not been to their benefit. However, books like this, if we understand the intersection with salmon and we are intelligent enough to realize their importance, we can make the difference needed and a future for Salmon and other life could be assured. This will remain in my bookshelf as a reference for a long time.

Know the difference between Pacific and Atlantic salmon
Nearly every restaurant has now fresh salmon on the menu. If you ever wonder why, read that book. Atlantic salmon is always 100% farm raised. Only Pacific types are wild caught. If you are particular about what you eat - this book is for you. One of the best non-fiction read ever.

Well written and researched, relevant to what the planet is going through today.
Made a perfect gift.

A wake-up call for the planet and everyone on it.
When I was young, it seemed that the Grand Banks would provide fish for the world forever, and that the California valleys, likewise, would provide fruit and vegetables. Now the Grand Banks are nearly barren and the lush California valleys of orchards and vines are alkali wastelands. Fishery after fishery have collapsed. The point is now critical for salmon…. And every one of us can do our part by making responsible choices regarding our environment. We can no longer say that it’s someone else’s problem…

This is an interesting and well written review of the history of the fish and its demise at the hand of mankind. As ever, Kurlansky has thoroughly researched his subject. I would recommend it to anyone interested in salmon and their future

Still a long way to go but the first few chapters brilliantly captures the theme of the book. It only gets better and better as the pages turn. Hugely informative and captivating - as too sobering to the extent of how one views what humankind considers the best way forward to protect our planet - and how wrong we are. 'Listen' to the salmon - and learn....!

There’s a lot of interesting and thought provoking material in this book but by looking in detail at the fate of salmon around the world the book ends up repeating the same story as the same factors apply regardless of place. This means the book, as a read, becomes a little tedious. That said, there is plenty of powerful messages. As a read though, I found it less captivating than his earlier fishy opus; Cod.

A very worthwhile read. Sad ... The human factor. An education. A family of truly remarkable creatures - salmon.
