Good Product But Don't Use As Instructed
I ordered these spikes months ago but just now using one of them for my peace lily. If you stick the spike in the soil as it is in the package, it will leak. First take all 3 pieces apart. Take the rubber gasket and insert it in the underside of the bird. Finally, take open end of the Terra cotta spike and insert it into the bottom of the bird using a gentle but firm twisting motion. Place the spike in the plant and fill with water.

Good self waterer, wish it was taller
2-month update: These are working very well. I get about 4 days of watering in my 2 plants, pictured. My plants are doing much better now that they get consistent water, instead of me thinking about watering once a week! I do think burying them was a good idea for what I needed.Original review: These are pretty neat! They hold a good amount of water, but the terra cotta piece is smaller than I'd like - I wish it was twice as long. I buried them deeper to ensure the roots get enough water. I tested these before adding them to my pots and they did a nice job holding water for many hours, just gradually allowing it to seep through the terra cotta. I also checked the seal before using, as other reviewers mentioned.

Hard to Put Together, but Plants Love Them!
I had to take 2 stars off of my review, because they aren’t easy to put together. They do work very well once you set them up properly.Do not follow the instructions they show on this site though. You have to take them apart. Remove the rubber grip ring, and then attach it around the top of the clay spike opening Don’t put it into the bird (like they say to do). Then push, gently twist the bottom of the bird on top of it. Some are easy to do, while others tend to squish/push the ring down in some areas. Just keep trying to gently fix it. You can test it by pouring water into it (over the sink) to see if it leaks out the sides. I’ve bought them twice, and they work- even when I had some problems putting them together. All of my plants are doing extremely well, since I’m not over or under watering them now.

Cute addition to your plants
These adorable self-watering spike plant birds are a great addition to any home container gardener's toolbox. I bought these as I was having issues keeping up with the watering on my porch container plants once summer hit. I live in a very humid location I was finding myself going out multiple times a day to hydrate my plants. Now I have these little bird helpers with the terra cotta spikes that help distribute out water whenever my plants need them. An added benefit has been learning how thirsty each of my plants really were. Some of the birds held water without refill after a few days and a few others I did have to refill after one day. It's interesting to see how well each plant is handling the humidity. I can definitely see me buying more of these as my container garden increases in size.

The water leaked right through the seal between the bird and the ceramic base.
Two of the four did not hold water at all, it leaked out through the seem immediately. And the 2 that did work , quit working after a day and did the same thing. Don't waste your money.

Work great if used right
I'm going to admit, I didn't like them at first. They seemed to leak significantly. I even requested to return them, and just never got around to shipping them back. I'm glad I didn't, because we pulled them out a few weeks ago for our herb garden, as a possible solution to watering during a planned trip. We decided to bury them a bit deeper than we did the first time, and voila! Works perfectly! The trick is to ensure the spot where the plastic and terracotta join is fully under dirt. This prevents it from being able to gush water, and instead ensures a slow release. We top these up maybe one a week, and our herbs are happy and growing, without showing signs of overwatering. Glad we gave them a second chance!

Cute and useful
Great little watering items. Look cute in the pots. Would be good if maybe a bit bigger as they empty in a day or two.

Easy to use, works great
Easy to use, looks good and works great with my outdoor pots. I have found though that they do tend to drain a lot quicker than they advertise (every 2-3 days instead of 7). Some of them it seems to be because the seam between the plastic piece and wick is coming apart. Great value for your money though compared to what else is out there.

Keeps the plants happy
I feel like these release the water a little too quickly. I wish the release was just a little bit slower. But the plants are happy so they are doing their job. They look great too.
