Perfect jumpstart to understand and help kids with SPD!
The odds are that you know someone with Sensory Processing Disorder, also known as Sensory Integration Dysfunction. You may not yet understand, but some of their strange, annoying and aggravating behaviors may have a basis in Sensory Processing Disorder or SPD. I've been treating children with Sensory Processing Disorder for 15 years and I recognize that when parents have finally sought out a diagnosis or answers to questions about their child, it’s been after years of confusion and frustration. When they are at this point, they are exhausted and need some desperate help. The reason I love Sensory Processing 101 is because it is full of quick and helpful explanations, ideas and resources to get you started, even before you finish the book. The appealing and playful visual layout of the book makes it easy to skim through, find what you need most, then come back and read more thoroughly later. There are many great books about Sensory Processing Disorder or Sensory Integration Dysfunction that are thorough with detailed explanation of the neurology and theories of sensory integration. I highly recommend many of these books to parents and other professionals. But many parents don't usually have the time or energy to read through detailed neurology before they understand how to help their children. Sensory Processing 101 is a great resource for overwhelmed parents who need some ideas quickly. The authors of the book are 2 occupational therapists, a physical therapist and an early childhood educator who has a child with Sensory Processing Disorder whom she home schools. Almost every chapter is focused on a different sensory system with a therapist perspective, a parent perspective and teacher perspective.I highly recommend this book for teachers wanting to understand students with sensory processing difficulties in their classroom. The research incidence indicates every teacher has a student with these challenges in their classroom. I understand that teachers are busy and are in need of constant learning to be better teachers, so their time is limited. Sensory Processing 101 is such an easy resource for teachers to use to understand some of their students, as well as gain helpful ideas to start trying immediately. The book has great suggestions of sensory activities that are easy to implement with all children in a family or in a classroom setting. They have even created supply lists to easily start these activities in your own home or school. All children will enjoy and be excited about participating. No fancy or expensive equipment is needed for these activities! The end of the book is full of accessible resources for Sensory Processing Disorder, including books, websites and online support groups. It also includes screening checklists for SPD if you are concerned about a certain child. You can order Sensory Processing 101 directly from sensoryprocessing101.com in print or digital formats. Amazon also sells the paperback.Start with Sensory Processing 101 for a quick jump start to understanding, screening and helping children with sensory processing difficulties!yumstheraplay.com

Great - wealth of information and easy book to read
This book was a fast read. It covered a span of information. I like how Dayna talked about her experiences as a teacher and then as a parent. As we have many struggles with our son at school and only wish that we could enlighten his teacher better of his difficulties. I found myself attaching sticky notes all the way thru the book, comparing our experiences and challenges. I like that this book wasn't too technical and anyone can understand it, so I can lend it to other people and feel confident that it will be easy for them too. I like how there is definitions of what should be normal and what isn't, giving plenty of comparison situations. It's a better understanding what the kids are going thru.Thank you for adding the paragraph - "Remember how I said this system baffles me? That is because with my son, we do not see just one of these behaviors - we see them all. Depending on the time of day or week...... we can relate to that!!!There are some great sensory game and activity ideas, depending on what sensory system you need help with.Great Red Flag check section so you know what to look for and which sense it effects. This book left me wanting more. Can you ever get enough when you are trying to understand what your child is experiencing and you're their advocate.Sensory Processing 101

This book is the key to one thing that every parent, teacher, or caregiver should give their children. This book translates signals and behaviors from the body's various sensory systems into an easy to understand language that we can all understand. Do fingernails on a chalk board make your hair stand one end? That's your sensory processing system. It's easy enough to understand that if your stomach rumbles you are hungry. But what we haven't all learned is that all of our body's systems send us signals - they may just be more difficult to understand. This book is the key to understanding your child's signals and offering fun activities in response. Most importantly, this book allows all parents, teachers, and caregivers to provide children the information they need to understand all of signals coming from their bodies and to respond appropriately. Quite simply, this book makes it easy to give your children the gift of understanding and listening to their own bodies and to help them develop appropriate responses to their sensory signals!

A Must Read to help your little one!
Love this book! I had read so many articles about SPD, but this book put all the info together in a very organized and user friendly manner. I use the cheat sheets in the back to make notes of my 3 yr olds behavior, which helps me explain it all to his doctor. Being able to read two perspectives (therapist and parent) for each sense is invaluable to me. The activities suggested for each specific sense is helpful. We are very crafty and do lots of activities, but now I am able to focus on the ones that truly help my child. The activities are simple, quick, inexpensive and FUN! Thank you for making a confusing subject make sense. I feel relieved that I'm recognizing the issues and have the tools to help my kiddo!
