Thoroughly enjoyable read - getting lots of tips to help in the studio - written in an accessible manner which is easy to comprehend - definitely worth getting to enlarge knowledge of glazing - if buying as a beginner, make sure you read another introductory book first to understand the basics before ploughing in with this, a lot of it will still make sense but worth understanding the foundations first before getting stuck in with this book.

Well writtten, the first half of the book explains the challenges and some of the techniques used for measuring and experimenting, for me this was really the good bit providing the iformation needed to make better informed decisions about the masses of glaze recipes available. The second part is more about recipies and in particular come baes from which to create other glazes, I find the gloss bases great and I can feel more confident about running indicative tests myself for leaching, microwave, diswasher compatibility. As usual all American ingredients so get some glaze software and use the chapter explaining about how to adapt. For me, I would have liked more about expansion, and fitting glaze although there is practical information. Perhaps too, some wider tabulated information about some of the materials that behave differently under different conditions (like Boron), while there is information there, the narrative style makes it harder to use for reference.If you want a recipe book with lots of variety, this is not really for you, if you want a better grounding or are interested in food-safe, then it is a good start

This book is essential for potters looking to be informed before diving into making your own glazes. Easy to read for what the subject is.

Prima di tutto devo dare una brutta recensione al venditore che mi ha spedito un libro danneggiato in una spedizione precedente. Ci tengo a precisare che non è stato un problema di questa spedizione perché il cartone era ben chiuso e non si era incollato al libro. Quindi il venditore ha volontariamente spedito questo libro nonostante il danno macroscopico creato in una spedizione precedente.Rimuovere il cartone e la colla appiccicata alla copertina non è stato banale ma per fortuna sono riuscito a riparare il danno: ora il libro presenta solo qualche piccolo segno di piegatura nella copertina.A parte questo il libro è arrivato in tempo.Io sinceramente speravo in un libro diverso. È molto tecnico e questo lo apprezzo, ma è piuttosto vecchio come edizione e come contenuti. Necessiterebbe di una revisione alla luce delle nuove conoscenze e dei nuovi strumenti che il ceramista può utilizzare: ad es. Il glaze calculator di glazy.org.Quasi tutte le ricette utilizzano fritte (che io al momento preferisco non utilizzare).Il libro si concentra sulla creazione di smalti food safe e stabili, molto interessante e utile: è questo lo scopo del libro e su questo aspetto è stato fatto un buon lavoro di chiarezza e approfondimento (almeno per l'epoca in cui è stato pubblicato). Questo aspetto non era però chiaro nel titolo e nella descrizione: Io speravo affrontasse meglio l'aspetto tecnico che determina smalti matt e semi matt, opachi o lucidi, densi o colanti. Avrei anche apprezzato un approfondimento tecnico sugli ossidi e il loro effetto sul colore, e l'interazione fra di loro.Quasi tutte le ricette utilizzano fritte (che io al momento preferisco non utilizzare).Il capitolo sulla creazione personale di smalti mi è sembrato molto corto e quindi penso sarà abbastanza deludente.
