Jean-Michel Basquiat (Volume 41) (Little People, BIG DREAMS, 42)

Fun and interesting.

I really like teaching my son about famous people from history. He is four though, so I am just now starting to be able to tell him who is alive or not. In another review it is mentioned that this book fails to mention the turbulence between Jean-Michelle and Warhol, or about Jean-Michelle's addiction or how he passed away, but I am very grateful that I don't have to explain those things out of order before he understands a lot of other things. I love this series of books. I don't need the Bowie book to show him smoking cigarettes or the Basquiat book to show his dark side. To me, a person's life story has lessons for each age. I want my son to draw inspiration, so I appreciate the un-inspiring parts being left for other lessons down the road, when he needs special examples to learn the harder lessons when that time comes. We have the one on Dolly Parton, Bowie, Basquiat, and Greta. I want more, but I think my son's shelf is overflowing. We read a lot of paper books, and we still use iPads and Kindles too sometimes, but most often we still read at bedtime from paper books. This one is ideal!

I read this book for a Basquiat lesson for my 2-3rd graders. It gets some conversations started with his Art…how he started where he ended up and how he worked. I will be using this again when this lesson comes into rotation again!

This little biography of Jean-Michel Basquiat was really cute! I didn't know anything about him going into this biography. He was a really interesting person and I want to look up more about his art. I can't wait to see what's next in this series!
