Awesome tool
This tool is awesome, especially when turning end grain. It leaves a smooth finish once you learn how to use it properly. I'd definitely recommend this tool for hollowing!

A well constructed tool that does not work well with KD hardwood.
I really wanted to like this tool. I wanted a tool that could hollow deep vases and perform undercuts on other woodturning projects, unfortunately, this tool was not up to the task of hollowing seasoned hardwood, soft maple in this instance. In the videos on YouTube, the Crown tool makes quick work of hollowing green wood, seasoned wood is an entirely different story. Unlike Oneway's "Termite," and hook cutters, the Crown tool 'cutter' was made in the same profile as a traditional scraper, but with a brass piece on the top to control the depth of cut.Removing soft maple was a chore. Much slower and requiring more effort than with a bowl gouge or even a conventional scraper. While the finish on the end grain was not terrible, there was more grain was torn out than I would have expected. The cut on the side grain of this end grain vessel was not smooth either, and controlling the cut was difficult. The tool chattered - a lot! I spent a tedious two hours before throwing in the towel. I finished the piece using a 55 degree bowl gouge, a bottom-feeder bowl gouge, and a couple of scrapers. In all fairness, if you are turning green timber, as in the YouTube videos, the Crown tool looks like it would do a good job for you. I decided to try this tool because, unlike the Oneway Termite, it is not prone to clogging up with chips. But the Termite is a cutter with a bevel and should do better on seasoned hardwood.

Deep hollowing.
I bought this for deep hollowing and after watching the videos on how to use it things went great. Got down 13 inches deep in this vase with very little effort. The tool rest stayed outside the vase. 18 inches maybe a little more should be no problem. Very well made tool. Can’t wait to do a nice large bowl.
