The most hands-on, practical book in the field?
Cole's new book delivers buckets of practicality. Cole describes this is not just a book, but “an immersive learning experience.” That’s a high claim: but it stands up to scrutiny, because what you have here is a workshop-within-a-book. Most books in this field see an author teaching/preaching their views. This book gets you involved in almost every page. What I like is that success in data communication is about far more than “choose the right chart.” Sure, that gets its place in this book, but so does considering the fundamental purpose, annotation layers, layout considerations, insight delivery, and the multitiude of other requirements for success. There are worked-through examples everywhere, as well as exercises for you to do. This is possibly the most hands-on book I’ve seen in this field. (note: I was given my copy of the book and know the author personally. I try my best to keep my reviews neutral)

Question book with some examples
Plenty of ideas and scenarios to test your application. This is more of the exercise book with a bit of explanation but the other book in the set contains the main explanation of approach so best to get the other book first

A wonderful resource for your own practice or for teaching
I wasn't sure whether I was wasting my money when I purchased this at the same time as Storytelling With Data. I figured that if the main book wasn't so good then the Let's Practice book would be a waste of money. I'm delighted to say that both books are proving to be useful. The main book is thought provoking, but the Let's Practice book really makes you think, and therefore makes the first book all the more worthwhile. You're not just reading about the concepts - instead you really are putting in the practice and therefore truly making the most of the concepts taught. I teach groups of learners about data, and so I hoped that the books would be useful in expanding my teaching to cover not only gathering data and reporting on it, but truly analysing it and making recommendations with appropriate visuals. This book is an excellent resource to give learners the practical experience they need. Highly recommended.

Disclaimer: I have not yet read the entirety of this book yet. Why? Because unlike many other books on communication and data visualization, you should not just read this book: you have to use it as you would a school handbook! I could spend a whole semester working through the numerous exercises presented here (which I intend to do). While Storytelling with data, Cole's first book, covered the theoretical side of communicating with data in an accessible way for beginning and seasoned professionals, this book invites you to put it all together and practice. Even better, it invites you to use it as both on your own and in groups, giving you a great excuse to spread the word on what goes on throughout the design process. It is a wonderful support to make your colleagues and bosses understand how much work goes into graphs and data visualization. I definitely recommend it to anyone working with data! If you need an excuse to step out of your comfort zone at work, do yourself a favor and get your hands on this book.

I would reccommend it who learn data analysis.
