Great Book!
This was definitely helpful for gaining a better understanding of phenomonologica l qualitative research. It is written in academic language but is broken down to be understandable.

Must have resource for phenomenological research!
You should read this if you intend to do phenomenological research in education, psychology, and other social sciences. But do not expect a straightforward "how to" guide. It is best to read this while reading phenomenological studies which have used his way of doing phenomenology or while discussing with a more knowledgeable researcher who has done phenomenology.

An excellent resource
I am a career educator, I like to read about pedagogical methods, cognitive theory and things like that. I also like to put these things into practice by devising exercises in my drawing and photography classes based on some of the concepts that interest me.The idea of a thematic narrative or an idiomatic expression are two ideas that I take away from my first read thruough. I agree that it is written in very accessible language compared to some of the other writings on phenomenology I have experienced. So. a wonderful resource for ideas and insight into what people say and how we can meta-listen to these exchanges.

Classic
Absolutely seminal and must-read work if you're considering phenomenology as a research method. It's also very practical and accessible, unlike the foundational work of Heidegger and Husserl. Also recommend Gadamer - Truth and Method for getting into hermeneutics.

Excellent Book but there is a 1997 Edition available elsewhere
Van Manen's work brings hermeneutic phenomenology to life with a particular focus on 'thoughtfulness' and 'tact' (a couple of terms that don't appear enough in the context of educating children). However, just bear in mind before ordering, that Amazon has the 1990 edition of the book for sale. There appears to be a 1997 Althouse Press version of this book available elsewhere (think its Western Education) and the book has a different (green) cover. If you need the more up to date edition for your studies (like I did) perhaps look into it a bit further. I've compared the table of contents of both books and whilst similar...there are some differences. I'm not sure how significant those differences are but I'll probably have to now turn around and buy the 1997 book from Western Education for my thesis. Hope this advice helps others avoid making the same mistake!

Fantastic journey
I highly recommend this author's book for those interesting in learning more about the complex, deep, and fascinating world of phenomenological research inquiry. A highly intriguing and relevant book for researchers and teachers. Van Manen writes with clarity and gives shape to this methodology.

Must have for phenomenological researchers
If your a graduate student who needs to know how to do a phenomenological study, this book is an absolute must. It tells you the does and don'ts of doing the research and illustrates the researcher's role during his or her interaction with the participants

What a writer!
This book, though a bit stifling with the pedagogy bit, is so well written that it brings an excitement to thinking about doing phenomenological research. His enthusiasm for life and for research is apparent. Van Manen just has a way with words. One of the smoothest texts I have had to read. Highly recommend for anyone in nursing, psych, or other phenomenological research programs.

Great for students
Delivered in perfect condition.A great book for anyone interested in phenomenology and it’s traditions. Van Manen gives an accessible yet detailed look at human science research and phenomenology through a pedagogic lens. I’d definitely say this book transcends its pedagogic roots and can be applied in several academic disciplines. It has helped tremendously with my Master’s thesis in the field of nursing. Highly recommended!

Brilliant Intro to Qualitative Research
I was due to read this book for my PhD and was not really looking forward to it. But it turned out to be brilliantly written and very engaging. There is a wizdom which shines through every page. Explains why van Manen is so influencial in North America.
