Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (Flip-up Fairy Tales)

Ruined childhood story
The book has nice illustrations. That's about it. It is very sanitized and unlike the memorable Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves I read as a kid. The 40 thieves were all men, Ali most def did not want to return the money he stole, Ali didn't tell Cassim about the cave until he was forced to (pre-cave discovery, Cassim had married rich, and Ali was a poor woodcutter), the thieves killed Cassim, Ali's "servant" was his slave, Ali's slave (Morgiana) took Cassim's body to a tailor to sew him up so no one finds out about the cave, the thieves did not have rocks placed on the top of the oil barrels they were hiding in - they had boiling oil poured on them by Morgiana, and the disguised leader of the thieves was killed by Morgiana during a sword dance. Morgiana was then freed and married off to Ali's son. Ali continued to visit the cave, didn't tell anyone about it, and took over his late brother's successful business.

Both Fun and Moral
This is a lovely version of this ancient story where the man who discovers the treasure doesn't turn greedy and the thieves get their just rewards. The 'mean' characters are written gently enough for little ones to not get upset. The flip-up parts feel like they'll hold up well too.I'd recommend this book!

an old fashioned Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves
I have been searching online for a long time try to find a version of story that is close to what I have read when I was a kid. And this is the one! I especially enjoy the nice illustrations.

Four Stars
Nice illustrations and the flaps are interesting, plus it's not as bulky as a board book.

Ali Baba
The story is well told & the pictures are good, but it is a rather 'politically correct' telling of the story. The head thief is a woman & when Ali Baba's brother is found in the cave by the thieves he's just put in a cage, not killed as in the original story. The robbers too are spared. No hot oil poured over them, just a stone placed on top of each barrel which slows down the thieves at the end who are then rolled in the jars to the jail!!

... old - the ending was changed but that was fine
Lovely illustration - I got this for a 3 and 4 year old - the ending was changed but that was fine

An OK book..
The story is a bit too long.. my daughter isn’t very excited about it as she is with others ex: Julia Donaldson’s books.. She enjoys lifting the flaps though!
