You'll like it if you liked it in the first place
Try going to IGN or 1up if you want a thorough review. As for me, I really enjoy this game. I don't recommend it for younger DS owners, as the learning curve is pretty steep [you really do have to read the manual if you're new to the series], and it has quite a bit of complexity. There actually is a tutorial mode, but it only shows you how to do the very VERY basics. The game is made by Square Enix, the same people that do the Final Fantasy series; and the similarities between the two are obvious from the get-go: classic turn-based battles [which sometimes last more than an hour], a deep storyline that will really suck you in, and very thorough "wanzer" [as the giant robots you battle with are called] customization. The actual battles are seen from a 2-D isometric camera angle [think Starcraft or Simcities]. Like I said in the title, most of the people that enjoy this game were already fans of the Front Mission series.Fun/Gameplay: 4/5... I had to play for a while for the game to actually get really good, but if you've got the patience, then your money is well spent. If you want, you can play the ENTIRE GAME using just the stylus, but I prefer the good ol' buttons, as some of the places you have to tap with your stylus [ie: choosing a place to move on the battle field, selecting from a list of weapons to use] are pretty tiny, and I sometimes tapped the wrong option.Graphics: 3/5... Entirely 2-D, but that's not a problem with me, as a 3-D engine would hog too much space on the game-card, thus severely limiting the amount of content the game could haveSound: 2/5... This game IS from the SNES and PS1 era, and seeing as how the effects, voice, and music quality back then were very basic...Reply Value: 4/5... Even though the game is MOSTLY direct copy of the original, they crammed in an entire new story [you can pick which of the two countries you'll fight for]. Even if you choose the same country to fight with, there are alot of things you can do differently, although the main plot itself doesn't allow for much deviation.

Fun, but complicated
Front Mission is a pretty fun game, from what I can see so far. Unlike many tactics games, which seem to be packed full of meaningless, easy fights whose sole purpose is to pad out the length of the game, Front Mission has challenging fights that not only require the player to maneuver his mechs with care and foresight, they also require him to design his mechs properly. A mech with a bad loadout will stand no chance on the battlefield no matter how crafty the player is. Except for the arena matches, each battle also has a story to back it up, so there are no random fights in this game. I consider that a good thing. Some downsides are that the extreme customization the game offers is undermined by the fact that, generally speaking, only the most up-to-date equipment is suitable for your next mission. That means a lot of buying new parts and selling old parts, so much so that by the time you're done your favorite mech designs will probably look nothing like what they did originally. Also, if you can't afford these new parts, then you're going to have to do a bit of grinding for money in the arena, and that can get kind of tedious. Finally, graphically speaking, since this is a port of a Super Famicom game, the graphics are going to be a bit behind other offerings on the DS. The units also appear to be rather small on the screen and it can be hard to select them with the stylus UNLESS you play it on theΒ Nintendo DSi XL Burgundy . The larger screens make playing this game much more convenient.Overall, if you like tactics games, but think they're too easy and too childish, you won't go wrong with Front Mission.

Excellent squaresoft series
I feel this series has often missed out on the limelight that it deserves (especially since square was such a heavy hitter in the 90's and early 2000's). Front Mission 3 for the playstation (it's on PSN) is one of my favorite games of all time. This is the first title to kick off the series and it is incredible, even though it is a remake this is the best platform you could hope to play it on, the double-screen display really serves to immerse the player. The games music is top notch, and the graphics are really neat for the style in which they are presented. If you are a fan on engrossing and complex stories then this game will captivate you immediately as well. The plot in this series centers around a group of mercenary pilots that are dealing with the changing times andchanging face of war, alliances and betrayals, new factions and rising and falling in the chaos of battle. If you are a fan of turn-based strategy rpgs like final fantasy tactics or simply a fan of mech-type games/animes then you should check this game out immediately and/or front mission 3.

Range
I'd give this 1 star, but it gets a charitable extra star. I enjoy Front Mission, want more Front Mission, but this is not great. The biggest problem is the weapon system: There's no range difference between guns and melee weapons?! You have to be adjacent to use both. Sure, guns will pop off first, but the only real ranged weapons are the missiles. Get those. So why the charity star? This is a remake, apparently, but since they went to the trouble of updating as much as they did, they should have updated the combat system! Really disappointing. If they wanted to include the original, awesome, have it in the menus-fun for comparison. But this was a wasted opportunity. As a fan that hated the real time 3D gameplay of the PS3 version, I hoped that this handheld version would bring the gameplay back to formula, much like Castlevania for the DS. But, sadly, nope. If you like turn-based games, worth trying, but otherwise an easy pass.

Perfect mech strategy RPG
Hours in this game, turn based RPG which is more a strategy game than a real RPG, two huge campaigns 1,000s of mech load outs, it is an awesome game!
