Amazing!
I tried whole oats (groats) for the first time today, and they are AMAZING! Very chewy and hearty, nice toasty- nutty flavor. I plan to order more right away because this is going to be my go-to grain in my grain bowl dinners!

A Find! Doesn't raise my blood glucose levels!!
Wonderful find for me in keeping carb spike a non-event. Oatmeal, or even steel cut oats spikes my blood glucose level, but oat groats do not. Still wonderful creamy oaty taste with a chewiness that I love. Add a bit of heavy cream or some pure peanut butter and it's absolutely an amazing and delicious meal. Can't buy locally but a couple lbs online is reasonable and goes a long way. A++++

Great Choice
There is a HUGE difference between these and the oat groats I usually buy from the bulk bin at the supermarket. They plump up much bigger after cooking, and they have a more pleasing, nutty taste. Looking at the raw groats it could be clearly seen that they were larger and more uniform than the bulk bin version. I cook the bulk bin groats at 3 cups of boiling water to one cup of the groats for 1 hour covered at a low simmer. When I did this with the with the Yupik groats, there was a significant amount of water that had not been absorbed, and I had to turn up the heat with the lid removed for another 10 minutes, or so. I think I will reduce the water to 2.5 cups the next time I cook a pan of the Yupik groats. The Yupik are very high quality groats and worth the extra expense. By the way, I TOAST my groats in the same pan I cook them in (dry pan). Toast on moderately high heat, stirring frequently. Don't walk away from them. They will turn a toasted brown color. Take them off the heat when they are to your liking and add the boiling water immediately (they will continue to toast and darken if you don't add the water in a timely manner). Don't burn them, but a few blackened grains aren't the end of the world. The toasting adds significantly to the complexity of the flavor. Try it.

06.25.24 UPDATE: I love groats!
UPDATE: I’m so glad I didn’t get my most recent bag of groats in my first order. If I had, I would have never ordered them again. In my order received in June 2024 there is a thin hard shell over about 10% of the grain (I’m guessing this is the husk) that once cooked, must either be spit out or swallowed as is. It can’t be chewed up. I hope this is a fluke and won’t happen again because I love groats when they are processed correctly to eliminate the husk.Original Review: So good for you and very filling. If you like the taste of oatmeal you’ll probably like groats. Groats are whole grains that include the cereal germ and fiber-rich bran portion of the grain. Rolled oats (like we use in oatmeal) are made from oat groats that have been dehusked and steamed, before being rolled into flat flakes under heavy rollers and then stabilized by being lightly toasted. If you want a less processed, more al dente style grain, eat groats. I love them.

Rocks in groats
I love these groats but I definitely just crunched down on a rock. Wondering how many I swallowed now. Be careful!

Groats. I am Groat.
I found that these oat groats are actually rather small in size compared to the groats used for making traditional oatmeal found in the supermarkets. I have a machine to squish them into rolled oats but the oats as they are make it a bit tough to do. I did successfully roll them into rolled oats for oatmeal and made some oatmeal. The flavor is better than store bought because these are fresh. I will try next to take 2/3 cup of groats and soak them overnight to soften them up then dry them off and run them through the roller to see if they roll through the machine easier. I would recommend cooking them on the stove top vs the microwave. They don’t fully cook out in the microwave. Im going to grind a bunch to make some oat milk as well to see how well it works and tastes. Store bought rolled oats don’t taste that good as oat milk.

Many unhulled oats ruin smooth texture of creamy groats
I have now bought a half-dozen or so bags of this product, so obviously it's good, but something keeps occurring that's wrecking these groats for me: there are so many unhulled oats. I soak them for 6 hours before cooking them for approx. 8 hours in a crockpot on low heat, with 4 parts water to 1 part oat groats. The result is creamy and great, except for having an unhulled groat in almost every bite! The contrast between the creamy groats and the groats still with hulls is extremely jarring, because the oats with hulls feel like sandpaper to your teeth. After the 6 hr. soak I vigorously rub them against the screen I use to drain them, and that does not get the ones still with hulls to release their hulls. I asked Perplexity.ai "how are oats hulled on a commercial scale to produce oat groats?" and discovered getting oat hulls off is very complex, so whatever company is doing the dehulling needs to improve their process.
