Great buy for anyone who needs a cooler and elevated laptop
I have been wanting this product for awhile now. I put it on my wish list around 5 months before it came out after I saw a video about it online from an electronic show.I already had been using a cooling fan since laptops can over heat quickly. I tried a couple before finding a good one for around $25. I also used another thing that propped the laptop up on an angle. I found a nice one for around $15. I watch a LOT of videos on my laptop. I wanted better sound than my gateway has included. I looked around at many speakers. I wanted something small and USB powered and found a good one for around $30. So over all what I had cost around $70. The Lapdesk listed for $80, but at the time of this review and my order lists for $67. So pretty much the same price of all those things. Even if it does cost a few dollars more, the quality and convenience of being all in one definitely make up for it.Even though I had those other things, I had to try the Lapdesk, and I love it. It is a much better purchase than those separate pieces. It is very comfortable, sturdy, and easy to use. I know some people say the sound is only ok, and others say it is good. I am one of the ones who think it sounds very good. As said before, I had a USB speaker which I liked, but the Lapdesk has even better sound. The fact that it has it's own volume controls (including a mute button) on it makes it even better and easier to control than my old speaker. The fan also has a switch under the volume controls, so it is easy to turn on and off. My old cooler wasn't so easy to turn off, but also I never wanted to turn it off, so I didn't mind. Also about the cooler; the old one was good and kept my laptop pretty cool and wasn't too loud. The Lapdesk fan is just as good if not betterWith my old laptop elevator, my laptop and cooler would always slip down when I was laying down. Having the cooler and elevator together solves part of the problem, and the rest is solved by the two fold up stoppers. So my laptop will definitely stay put now.Other nice features are the fact that this all runs from a USB port and draws very little power. The Lapdesk has something that lets you push in the USB cable to hide it and keep it from getting stuck on anything. When not plugged in there is something to clip the unplugged cable into. One other feature is the inclusion of two plastic pieces which for a laptop can be placed in at the top of the fan grill, or for a netbook in the middle of the grill. These prop up the computer a little more if you'd like it. On my previous and my current laptop all the rubber feet fell off, so my computer isn't lifted up much, which limits air flow underneath. So the extra lift takes the place of those feet. The Lapdesk is great, but there is room for improvement. For one thing Logitech could have easily built in a USB hub, or in the least used a USB pass through device on its cable so it wouldn't use up a USB port. My laptop has only 3 ports, so anything would be good. They could have easily put this into the device. Another thing is the problem with headphones. If you plug them into your computer, they will not work because the sound is being sent to the Lapdesk and not the internal speakers. So far the only work around is unplugging the USB cable and losing the fan, or changing the default playback device back to the internal speakers to use the headphones, and changing it back to the Lapdesk afterwards. I will try to find an alternative with software. Lastly, it would be nice if it was either less wide, or if somehow the sides could fold up for narrow places like certain arm chairs. The negatives are minor and I definitely recommend this product. Even if you were only planning on getting a cooling fan, get this if you can afford to do so. It is better value overall.

Great item, though far from perfect.
I bought this lapdesk for the speaker system, but received so much more. My Acer laptop just doesn't put out much volume. You can't even hear most videos on it at all unless you strained your ears. Enter the Logitech N700 Speaker Lapdesk. This is definitely a great item, though far from perfect. It has an idiot-proof set-up. Anyone can do it. No software is required; just plug the USB cord into a slot on your PC and it is ready to go. To my pleasant surprise, it has great sound. I read the positive reviews about the bass and great stereo sound, but I knew I wouldn't believe it until I heard it myself. Well, now I have and I couldn't be more pleased. For comparison, my Acer laptop goes up to volume number 100, which isn't very high for streaming movies. The same volume with the Logitech is a mere 30, and even this low setting sounds better. You can hear the bass. The Logitech also goes up to 100, which is way louder than the laptop and loud enough to be heard in another room. Of course, this isn't a stereo system. Don't expect it to sound as good as one. It is a great sounding system in itself. My stereo fanatic husband was impressed with it, which says a lot for me. You'll enjoy listening to CD's and watching movies with this item hooked up to your laptop. Also, as the other reviews stated, the fan runs silently, though, if you want to check on it and see if it is running, all you have to do is tilt over your laptop and you will hear it running. It keeps my PC running cool too. The day I received it, my laptop was on for 6 hours straight and there was no heat building up; it wasn't even warm. It's been a couple of weeks now and my netbook and laptops have no over heating issues. As for the battery, I have noticed with using the lap desk, the battery does drain more quickly. It sits comfortably on the knees. Those are the pros. Now onto the cons: there is no extra USB socket or plug through available on the Lapdesk. When you plug it into your laptop, you lose a USB socket on your laptop. There isn't a light on to show you the fan is running; though there is a red light on when you have the speakers on mute. Hopefully, Logitech will fix these minor issues in future models. The new car odor that emanates from the time you take it out of the box and being used is a strong one. I've had mine out of the box a few days and the smell is just now beginning to fade. These are just minor issues that really don't affect the usability of this great item. However, the biggest problem I have encountered with the Lapdesk is a major one for me: this cool, useful lap desk doesn't work on an older Dell laptop running XP. No matter what I did I couldn't get it to work. Perhaps it needs new drivers; I'll have to check. As it stands straight out of the box, it's no go for the Logitech Lapdesk and my Dell Inspiron 1100. It does work on my new ASUS netbook running XP. Go figure. It also doesn't seem to be fully compatible with my Acer laptop running Vista. I know that you can't run another sound device when using this desk, but evidently you can't open another program, too when watching video when running this. I don't know if this happens with everyone or just me, but every time I have the lap desk on, and play a movie from Netflix or Youtube, and then I open another program, say Word, the PC freezes and I have to shut it down manually with the power button. I can't even bring up Task Manager because the whole thing including the cursor is non-responsive. There's nothing in the literature about any of this. I'm wondering if it is a glitch in the Lapdesk. Has anyone else experienced anything like this with their laptop and this Lapdesk? This has happened to me three times consistently. Everything operates smoothly as long as I don't do anything else on the PC while running the speakers. Overall, I think the Logitech N700 Speaker Lapdesk is a useful invention. It's one of those items you lived without until you got your hands on it and now wonder how you ever lived without it.UPDATE: June 24, 2012: I still own this and it is still working great. The issues I had experienced with the Acer Vista no longer exist. Maybe an update fixed that. I just bought a Acer 5750 from Amazon with Win 7 and this lap desk works with it too. No issues. Do I still like this item? Yes, very much.
