Tuttle Rarely Disappoints
I bought this textbook because my college Japanese class used the same textbook (cover and format) for Elementary Japanese. Thus, I knew that this textbook would be good for diving into Tagalog bare bones. I am on lesson 2 beginning 3 and I have been satisfied with the level of guidance and the activities available. The online material (listening) is great and difficult. I think this is the best starter material for those wishing to learn Tagalog.

Pretty decent book.
Mine came in pretty decent condition, I don't know how to review it specifically as I'm not the best at studying languages, but it had been useful to me so far!

Finally, a grammar of Tagalog for those committed to stick with the language for life, to strive unfalteringly towards mastery.
I am multi-lingual already – Beijing standard Mandarin Chinese, Russian, French, Kiswahili, and North Welsh, amongst a repertoire of others. I had been searching for a serious linguist's grammar of Tagalog, my wife's native language, ever since we met four years ago. Even an extended trip to the Philippines rendered nothing of sufficient depth, breadth, and challenge. My search continued here for something that could unlock and unfold the unique complexities of the beautiful language of Tagalog with the rigour that only a true linguist could could write, a rigour that a true linguist could appreciate. With Domigpe's and Domingo's Elementary Tagalog – Tara, Mag-Tagalog Tayo! – finally – I need search no longer. What had been baby steps in the language without a serious guide and accompaniment, now is leaps and bounds. The once intimidating, thoroughly elucidated with a linguist's precision, is now abundantly clear. As I charge on, at least two hours a day, unwilling to put it down, my enthusiasm burgeons from passion to obsession.Tagalog is accessible. One just needs the key, the right key. This is that key.

A couple of problems.
1) There is no answer guide for the textbook. I called Tuttle Publishing and isn't even an instructor's book with the answers either.2) There are grammatical errors throughout the book even starting from the introductory chapter.Granted, the textbook and the workbook work together quite nicely, both books needs a refresh and should get upgraded.

One of the best language guides in Tagalog!
I have several books, but this is my favorite. It has exercises for reading, writing, speaking and listening. (There is an audio CD for listening practice.) It is designed for use in a classroom setting, but it's still valuable for self-study. The grammar is introduce in managable chunks with plenty of examples. I like the simple, easy-to-understand format. Also, at 400 pages, there is plenty of material, which includes valuable insight into the Filipino culture.

Easy way to learn quickly.
Easy way to learn tagalog. I've been going to the Philippines for years, but never learned more than a few words of tagalog. Now, armed with just some basic knowledge, I'm finding I'm enjoying the place more than ever. Highly recommended, effective way of learning Pilipino. I'm a long way from bi-lingual, but this has definitely enriched my experiences in this wonderful country.

Hard to use on your own
Not really appropriate for self study as many of the activities require a partner. The grammatical explanations are good. Honestly, if there was a good app for learning Tagalog, I would prefer it over this book. It’s nice they have a CD. The book does throw a lot of words to memorize at you and some things like the question word “ba” they just start using without explanation.

Beginning language learner -- great results
I am new to learning Tagalog and this book was recommended to me by a native speaker. It is very helpful, as is the CD. An accompanying workbook may also be purchased that pairs well with this textbook. I love it! It has made my language learning both natural and easy.

Good Buy
This is a good choice to learn from for the start, but as I said in another review for the workbook, it is bet to have a native speaker to support you. It does give you a lot of explanation and I find it very clear, but I might be biased as I have some background on the Tagalog language.

In am happy with this book
In am happy with this book. I am poor at learning other languages. However, the simple step by step it shows in grammar and linking words together has helped me to understand, and has given me more confidence to learn this language. the only thing I could ask more is to increase the Vocabulary in the Glossary at the back of the book.

Ok but missing an answer section on the kindle version
The book seems Ok except that it has no Answer section for the tutorial problems in the back of the book. This is a serious omission for anyone who is studying by themselves needs the answer section to correct their answers and know they are on the right track. Also the tutorial section brings up language not covered in the preceding learning content section so again you have to guess the language and with no answer section to check with this is difficult. I like the culture section as I feel it is really important in learning a language and it is very interesting.
