Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Cult classic for a reason
Cult classic for a reason, even if it smooches a ton of books together and leaves out some bits it's a great movie alone. One of my favorite Michael Cera roles. The movie also has a kick ass soundtrack. There's a who's who of supporting actors who would go on to be good actors later. You can, I have with friends, named Super Hero roles they'd all end of playing while watching. Edgar Wright has mastered editing and transition scenes. You feel like you're watching a comic book come to life (much like Ang Lee's Hulk). Highly recommend.

It's too bad there are only 5 stars for a movie that deserves 10!
As if the 8-bit version of the Universal opening theme song wasn't awesome enough to make you love this movie, the rest of the movie just kicks ass. Suffice to say that although I've never seen any other movies by Edgar Wright (I know, it's a crime that I have yet to watch "Hot Fuzz" or "Shaun of the Dead" and I suppose I could watch either movie when it shows up on TV, but I hate commercials. So, Netflix queue, here they come!), after watching "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" for, like, ten times, I can say, by the authority vested in me as someone who loves kick-ass movies, that Edgar Wright is officially the most awesome director...at least of the past six months.Because I love this movie so much, I'm not sure I can communicate anything coherently. So, in lieu of a brilliant, lucid, succinct review, and as a homage to Nick Hornby's novel "High Fidelity", I offer the following list: Ten Awesome Things about "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"1. The soundtrack. The Pixies, low-fi bass rifts, Beck-inspired singles, and Beachwood Sparks and their cover of Sade's "By Your Side" are just some of the reasons that this soundtrack rocks every second of the movie.2. The Smashing Pumpkin t-shirts. Any movie that make any reference to the Smashing Pumpkins is cool in my book. (Sadly, though, not a single SP song is used in the film.)3. It takes place in Canada. Canada's cool.4. It is framed as a classic video game of the classic Nintendo variety. (Who doesn't remember playing Super Mario for all those coins?)5. The trivia about Pac Man is erudite yet funny.6. The soundtrack (Okay, it's so awesome it deserves two slots on this Top Ten list.)7. The script. It's clever, witty, snappy, hella funny, and so true to-yet removed from real life with some of the greatest, most awesome-est lines ever. Here's a taste and by no means is this an exhaustive list:* "Listen, I was thinking, we should break up...or whatever."* "We gotta get some buzz goin'. We need ground swell. We need stalkers."* "What? I'm not afraid to hit a girl. I'm a rock star."* "You punched the highlights out of her hair!"* "I was just a little bi-curious./Well, honey, I'm a little bi-furious!"* "I'm in Lesbians with you."* "Well if my cathedral of cutting edge taste holds no interest for your tragically Canadian sensibilities, then I shall be forced to grant you a swift exit from the premises...and a fast entrance into hell!"* "Dying's gotta suck./You know what's sucks? Getting killed by that guy."* "Young Neil, you have learned well. From this point forward, you will be known as: Neil.")8. The movie is faithful to the story's graphic novel origins. In fact, the complete 7-volume set is sitting in my Amazon.com wish list. (Hint, hint, nudge, nudge anyone for my birthday or just because!)9. Bleeping out the profanity. It helped me allow my kids to watch it and love it with me. (Not that that's ever stopped me before given that I agree with John Milton's argument in "Areopagitica" that cloistered virtue is no virtue at all.)10. Bass Battle. `Nuff said. This movie is so awesome that a Top Ten list cannot do it justice. So, here are Ten More Awesome Things about "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" that didn't quite make the list:1. The character, Comeau, played by Nelson Franklin: a douche bag who knows everyone but knows nothing. (Greatest line, when listening to a live performance of a band, "You should see them live, they're much better live.")2. Did I mention that the soundtrack rocks?3. My wife and kids love it as much as I do. (Well, maybe not as much as I do.)4. One of the shortest songs ever performed in a movie: "We hate you; please die."5. The pee-meter.6. One of the coolest band names ever with the coolest intros. ( "We are Sex Bob-omb and we're here to make you think about death and get sad and stuff.")7. Chris Evans (you know, The Human Torch from "Fantastic Four" and the next Captain America) as Lucas Lee, a caricature of the action hero with the commiserate caricature lines like "Kiss me, I'm dying," or "The only thing keeping me and her apart are the two minutes it's gonna take for me to kick your ass."8. Michael Cera doing choreographed martial arts proves that lanky geeks can fight!9. Bill Hader's over-the-top narration.10. Vegan Police. (You'll have to watch the movie to see what that's all about.)For these reasons, and so much more, I give "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" 10 out of 5 bass guitars.

Rating: Awesome
I don't give very many five star reviews, but after careful thought, I couldn't give this film anything but. It set out to do something and achieved what it wanted to, 100%.I had been reading O'Malley's books for years, but when I heard Scott Pilgrim was being made into a movie, I just rolled my eyes. As a friend in the comics business once told me, "They're going to screw your book. Just decide how much you want to be paid to get screwed." Now, this isn't as true as it used to be--a new generation of directors who understand comics are finally producing good work, like Watchmen--but it's still the way to bet. Which I why I was surprised when I heard from Bryan that he was pretty excited about it. Still....I was aware the film was being made but was too nervous to keep track of it. Even after it came out I dragged my feet about seeing it, then finally went near the end of the run.And I LOVED it!Not only is it the best possible adaptation of the book, it is pure 100% fun. I was talking to a comic book artist I know and raving about it. He's a HUGE Scott Pilgrim fan and loved it. Then he said: "Too bad it bombed, huh?" I was truly shocked--I had no idea. I couldn't believe how anyone couldn't like the movie. It's imaginative, original, well-written, well-acted, and awesomely, perfectly over-the-top.And now that I have the BR and have rewatched it twice (plus 3x with all the commentaries) I am still agog that it wasn't a huge hit. (Michael Cera has glumly said "We got blindsided by eight guys called The Expendables".) I think the problem some people have with it is that they aren't willing to just go with the flow and accept the strange reality the movie takes place in.Edgar put his heart and soul into this movie and it shows on every frame. I don't know how many times I'd have to watch it to catch all the references and inside jokes, and the backgrounds are so fill of tidbits I've had to step through some scenes almost frame-by-frame in a probably futile attempt to catch them all. The details are amazing, from the note-perfect Bollywood style of the fight with Patel (eg, the demon sisters all have big racks, and if you've ever watched a Bollywood film...) to the promo posters for the bands and the way the lyrics of the music often intercut and play off the script. The actors committed to this film above and beyond the call of duty. Let's face it, training Michael Cera to do long choreographed fight shots and look good doing it must have taken a hell of a lot of work on his part and the part of the fight choreographers. Cera commented that the thing he looked forward to most at the end of filming was "never doing another pushup again in my life." But like them or not, he did them anyway during the filming. And of course for several of the actors, they had to go from wondering what side of their musical instrument was up to playing live and recording the soundtrack. Only Cera and Larson had previous experience, and neither of them professionally. (Larson has a lovely voice!)Cera's acting does the job it needs to. He's pretty Scott Pilgrim-like. (I howled with laughter at his delivery of the line "But it's haaaard!") Culkin steals the movie, as others have noted here. Most of the other parts don't call for ACTING! as much as in most movies, but again, most of the actors do their work. The exception is the clumsy and leaden performance by Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim. My god, she's awful. But I need to give a special shout-out to Alison Pill who IS Kim Pine. It was almost creepy. Oh yeah, and Jason Schwatzman is brilliant as Gideon. A complete a-hole, just as he should be.I doubt anyone who has read this far (if anyone ever does) is not already a fan of the movie. But talk a few people into watching it with you, or lend out the disk. I think this movie will be a (semi) cult classic, and hopefully after a few years it will at least make its money back. It's just too cruel that Scott Pilgrim vs the World should be a Bob-omb.Scott Pilgrim FTW!

Being a vegan gives you super powers?...
As an uber fan of the books, I couldn't face just buying the standard blu-ray release of this movie. Though upon research the special features were pretty much the same if not worse vs the standard disc. The movie if you have not seen it is a fantastic conversion from the graphic novels. Michael Cera is the perfect Scott Pilgrim - there is in fact not a single mis-cast character in this movie. The actual steelbook is really nice, its unusual to see a landscape depiction across the cover - and the image is actually embossed too so adds a bit extra to the quality. The steelbook version is absolutely worth the extra money if you're a fan of the books or movie.. or just relate to the story of finding the literal girl of your dreams (then having to fight her ex-lovers for her)

Go in with no expectations and you will be pleasantly suprised
THE FILMScott Pilgrim vs The World was not a film I was expecting to be able to sit through much less love. From the trailers, the cover of the Blu-ray disk and the premise of the movie I was not expecting what turned out to be a really enjoyable movie that was as unique as it was fun. This is definitely not a movie for everyone and certainly not for someone who enjoys their films to be grounded in reality. There is so much in this movie that would be on most film makers 'do not do under any circumstances' list but for some reason it works here.I could go into great detail about what was great about this ridiculous story of a young man who has to battle 'seven evil exes' in order to win over a young woman he is infatuated with, but instead I will ask you to simply take a chance on it. The film is highly surreal and bares little resemblance to reality but that only ads to its charm.VIDEO AND AUDIO PRODUCTIONThe picture and sound quality of this film is top notch. It is a great film to watch in blu-ray because the hyper clarity of the world in which this movie is set. The action sequences are well filmed and look brilliant in high def and the ultra high contrast and vivid colours will give your TV a thorough testing. The audio as well can't be faulted. The sound is immersive but not overwhelming and only ads to the quality of the film.OVERALL VERDICTOverall this is a highly enjoyable film that succeeds as both an enjoyable movie and a great Blu-ray production. Again it is not for everyone but for people looking for something a little different I recommend giving this a try.

He punched the highlights out of her hair!!!
Where do you even start with this film? I know I'll start by saying it's frickin amazing! One of my all time favourites, it's just so hilariously stupid, silly, dumb etc... The cast do an absolutely brilliant job, some of the quotes and one liners still have me on the ground laughing even after the 100th or so watch of this film. Just the way in which the film was shot gives it that video game type feel to it which is very cool, the music is top notch. This is just one of those films you can watch over and over and over again and never get bored.

I liked the comic, this was boring.
The characters in the Scott Pilgrim comics are inherently likable, because they are drawn cute. Comic characters can get away with things real actors can't. Bart Simpson or the South Park boys would be insufferable if they were portrayed by real children.Maybe this is why, even though I enjoyed the SP comics, I found myself disinterested in Scott's and Ramona's movie romance. He's whiny, a jerk and has no charisma to make up for it. She's aloof and seems arrogant. What do they see in each other? I would have preferred to see the movie without these two in it. I liked Knives, Wallace and Scott's Band.

'Scott Pilgrim vs. The World' is an amazing story about a 22 year old who forms a band called 'Sex Bob-omd & Scott & his friends start becoming a group in big concerts. Scott (Michael Cera) has met the girl of his dreams 'Ramona Flowers' (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) but, theres one thing that Scott doesn't know is that she has seven evil exes. So Scott has to defeat all seven guys Ramona has dated but, the storyline is also the fights where it's happing in a video game.
