I decided it was time to get back to it because my stress level has been through the roof and I need something to do that isn't using the part of my brain that is using words. As a writer, I think a LOT and as a person with anxiety, my thoughts can be stressful. I had no idea what book to buy for my first venture but when I saw this one with owls in it, I knew I had to have it. I love owls and have a small tattoo of an owl in a tree with the moon behind him. I was a little worried when I saw the description photo because the book looked cut off at the bottom and I wondered if the pages would also be cut off. When I received the book, the bottom did and does look like it was cut short a bit but none of the 30 pages are affected at all. They are full pages with plenty of space around them. Because I am a n00b at adult coloring,I bought a few sets of different kinds of pencils and I have a great set of gel pens as well. I am still getting up the nerve to actually put a writing utensil to the paper and start on a picture but I plan to start tonight. I love every picture in this book and have chosen the one I will start with. It looks a little less complicated than the others and it is my favorite of all the pages. The drawings are unique, pretty, and very, very detailed. There are some mighty small areas to color which will take some concentration but nothing looks impossible. The paper is thick and the pictures are on just one side so you can use almost anything to color with and won't ruin another picture because none is on the backside. I plan to either rip the page out and color it or put a piece of paper between the pages anyway, just in case. I may be using gel pens and they could be a bit dense. For the low price, I could not be happier with the quality and selection of drawings in this book. It's not going to be easy or fast to color these pages but that's the idea. Relax, take my time, create in a whole new way - without words. I can't wait to get started and am very glad I started with this book. I plan to buy others for variety and, if I find that the quality of the others I buy is better, I will lower my rate on this book but for now. I am going with 5 stars. I just love the variety of owls and quality of paper in the book. Review: Beautiful, creative designs. - My favorite coloring books. Marjorie Sarnat is the best! Pages also perforated which I love.

Nothing but love for my first adult coloring book.

Gorgeous illustrations of stylized owls
My husband and I have started using Adult Coloring Books as a way to de-stress. I know that many crafts use the same part of the brain that one uses in meditation, so I wasn't surprised to read that many other adults were turning to coloring. I have bought several different types of books and I find that I like a lot of the ones by Creative Haven/Dover. I have found that my non-alcohol based markers and my gel pens all leak through this brand of book, so I am sure to place paper between the pages to keep the pages behind fresh and clean. I've found that freezer paper works really well for this purpose. The pages of the book are single-sided and are perforated at the bound edge so you can remove the page to color or to frame afterwards. The pages are a bright white and have a decent pound weight - they are not flimsy. This is the second Creative Haven book by Marjorie Sarnat (her first has been one of my favorite - Cats.) This book of Owls is now tied for for my top honors. There are 31 images to color (if you don't include the small faceplate on the title page.) The images have a wide range, including: an owl sitting on a wildly decorated crescent moon, an owl with butterflies, a "smart" owl amongst his/her books, owls on a wooden rocking horse, pirate owls, fairy tale owl, totem pole owls, steampunk owl, the owl and the pussycat (yes, cat included!) and many, many more. These illustrations are so lovely, I plan to do each and every one of them. I love that the Ms. Sarnat has used such wild colors in her artwork - I plan to color these with just that kind of abandon.

Lots of intricate detail
I have several adult coloring books and the Creative Haven ones are amongst my favorites. The Owls book is printed on decent paper stock that allows me to fully saturate my pictures and to color blend without tearing or becoming weak. The pictures are printed on one side so there is no concern about print showing through from the other side or about markers soaking through and ruining another picture. Each page has a perforation near the spine so that individual pictures can be removed. I prefer to remove the pages before I begin to work on them because I like a flat working surface, but I do know people who prefer to keep them all in the original book. The style of perforation in this book is the larger dotted sections so they don’t tear out as easily and they do leave “bumps” on the edges, so scissors will be needed to clean up the edge. I have used gel pens, colored pencils, and water colors on these pages. The paper works well with all 3 of those mediums, but my favorite is to use a combination of nicer quality colored pencils and watercolors. A nice set of watercolor pencils would also work quite well. I do like the art nouveau style, and it is fun to work with all the detail. I wish there was more variety in the style of the owls, but overall I am happy with this book. While I don’t think I will frame and hang the completed pieces, I do find it satisfying to mindlessly sit and work through the pages. I will finish this book and I might buy more. I purchased this book at full price as a personal purchase, and a review was not required.

I have been in the mood for colouring in for the past few days and decided to treat myself to this book. I have loads of books that are similar but non with pictures of owls. I enjoyed colouring in the images but did find it very detailed and struggled to finish the picture I was doing. I do like the book and will revisit colouring it in at a later stage but I probably messed it up by using too many colours. I find when deciding on a picture from this book, it is best to stick to a colour theme or choose the colours before hand. Too many colours, just like too many cooks, spoil the broth! This applies to me and getting a little over anxious with different colours and lost the plot along the way. There are 30 pictures to colour in - in total. All of them as beautiful as the next and a lovely book for anyone who enjoys Adult colouring in but it would be suitable for children and teens too. Although I usually use copic markers as I find them easier, it is also great to use watercolours or regular colour pencils too. I really find it relaxing and good to just get lost in what I am doing for a little while. I always get lost in time when I do anything creative and this was no different. I spent a couple of hours doing each page and it was enjoyable and fun. The pictures are clear and unusual but not overly complicated to do. There are 30 in total and they are all unique and different. The pages are perforated and only printed on one side. I put a piece of cardboard under the page because I used copic markers and they bleed through the pages. The spaces on the images are large enough in some parts to shade using watercolour paints or pencils. At the current price of £3.99 it is a bargain for this book. I have added photographs for your convenience.
