GPEN GIAC Certified Penetration Tester All-in-One Exam Guide

First of all and most important this book helped me pass the exam. It has all the material in it that you need to know. The best part about it is that the author walks you through a lot of the process and has screenshots so you know you are on the right track.The book also is a great reference. I would recommend making notes as you go through it cause you will want them if you have or get a job in the industry.The book has an added bonus that I was very surprised it included. Steps on how to setup your own lab to test all the techniques explained. This is huge! Even if you search online there's very little resources on the best way to do it. That was the key to really trying out a lot of the methods and learning by doing.

This is a great book - not just for GPEN test prep, but for general knowledge and experience for newer pen testers. The scenarios you are presented are realistic, and it gives a great groundwork for pen testing, with actual walkthroughs with the tools you will use. The advice on setting up a lab and actually doing the work rather than just reading about it will be a great help for having a real understanding of what you are doing, rather than just theoretical knowledge.Disclaimer: I do know the authors personally, and work directly with MacCormack. I can tell you that his expertise and passion for pen testing is only matched by his affinity for chain restaurant BBQ.

The GPEN exam has changed dramatically since this book was published. This will not assist you in any way on the exam.I purchased this thinking it would be a nice way to prepare for SEC560. It was a complete waste of time. I did not use this book once when I took the GPEN exam.

Insightful, professionally written and easy to understand but for more experienced testers. They show you how to setup a lab and they walk your through a lot of hands on examples. If you are taking the GPEN I highly recommend you purchase this book and get to know the concepts within. Even if you are not taking the GPEN this is a great book to have as a reference.Within this book these guys show you how to setup a GPEN lab, you get online access to the digital content in this book (exam questions, code examples, and a printable PDF of the Capstone project).

I was really happy with how the book was put together. I only spotted a few errors which is not bad for a first edition.I will caution you that you can no longer solely use this book to prepare for the GPEN exam. It does not cover some of the new exam objectives around Azure. Not the author's problem though. I waited a bit too long to take my exam and the objectives changed.

This is a terrific book that covers all the topic areas in one organized location as opposed to SANS' 6 or 7 individual books. I particularly like that the book does not just state 'use a tool to...', instead it describes and provides examples for when and how to use each tool. This book will definitely help you understand the course content to pass the GPEN exam AND will likely become your goto resource for school, work, and CTFs.
