giving four stars for the scent alone. it’s my first shaving soap so i can’t compare it to others, but it certainly lathers enough for shaves.

I was in the market for an artisan shave soap and landed on TSE lumberjack mostly because of the price. Fortunately the performance is excellent. I can easily whip up a creamy lather that provides very good cushion and pretty good slickness leading to an excellent shave. I very easily get plenty of lather for 3 or more full passes and touch up.Regarding the scent, I'm still a little uncertain. On one hand, it doesn't smell great. When I opened it up and had my wife and son smell they wrinkled their noses in disdain. Maybe it smells a little too much like an actual lumberjack? On the other hand I kind of dig it and find my self liking it more each time I use it. It's not the type of scent I'd necessarily buy again, but I can easily enjoy using it.My only criticism with this shave soap is the container packaging. The container itself is excellent, and is perfect for loading your brush. I'd much rather have the name of the scent show on the top of the jar though rather than as a sticker placed on the bottom. I assume this was done to keep the cost down though, and honestly that's a compromise I'm fine with.*UPDATE The scent has mellowed out, with most of the "lumberjack's dirty laundry" smell disappearing leaving a fresher woodsy scent. I'm guessing this funkier smell was the tallow which faded with use. It wasn't terrible to start with and has consistently left my face feeling clean and fresh, but the scent has definitely mellowed into more of what I expected based on the description.

I really like this. It's very creamy and holds a great lather. I agree with other reviewers that the scent is nothing extraordinary but that doesn't bother me. I'll be buying this brand again.

I have purchased this in the past and love the smell. The person that uses it says that it lathers well for shaving and leaves the skin smooth and soft after use. Will continue to purchase

Does give a decent lather, (given I was only using cold water). Has a very strong medicinal black cherry smell to the soap. This does not translate to what you smell in the lather. Good mix and the lather only has a trace of cherry smell which goes away after you rinse it off your face. Leaves a good soft feel to the skin afterwards. Don't just sniff the soap, it's too strong. Lather it up first...
