Great clippers for anyone (dog, cat, human...) with sensory issues!
Scaredy Cut Silent Pet Grooming Kit For Cats & Dogs - Quiet Alternative to Electric Clippers For Sensitive Pets - Right-Handed, Pink I've been clipping my own dogs for more than twenty years, and have been using a combination of scissors and electric clippers to do so. But my retired service dog, a shih tzu, has become very sensitive to and fearful of the sound and feel of the electric clippers. She's deaf, developing tunnel vision and has a severe heart murmur. This combination of factors causes her to pass out and/or have seizures when she's exposed to physical and/or emotional stress. Since she can no longer hear a baseline of sounds to allow her to filter out what's threatening and what's not, the clippers cause her a great deal of stress... and that causes me a great deal of stress! The physical condition for which I have a service dog is exacerbated by stress, so grooming has become a bad time for both of us... and for my present, working service dog, as he is trained to react to my stress. Bad scene, all around! Enter these clippers: I wasn't sure they were anything more than a gimmick, but the problem was dire enough that I was willing to risk it. As it turns out, they don't stress my old girl. I can get into places with them that were awkward and/or impossible with the electric clippers. I no longer have to pull out clippers, comb and scissors: these little scissor/clippers are all of those things combined. As I'm clipping around her feet (I like to give her Teddy Bear feet which require a scissored guide cut around the outside bottom of the paws) I can flip the clippers over and use them as plain scissors without having to let go of her foot and transfer from clipper to scissor. I don't have to hold a comb in one hand and the scissors in the other in the fiddly places where her hair won't stay fluffed out for the scissors cut. She does have hair, rather than fur, and these do a more precise job of cutting than clippers. They're easier and more precise to use around her eyes and in her hygiene areas than electric clippers. The tension on them is easier to adjust than on the electric clippers and they're easier to clean than the electric clippers. Although I don't like to clip dirty fur, I can with these. This is important for those times, like today, when she can't handle the stress of a wet bath, but she still needs some clipping. The electric clippers leave too much behind then. These clippers did an excellent job; and I can, when I need to, sharpen them myself. And last, but by no means least, these are so easy to pull out and use on the fly that I can take a few clips here and there on those spots that require more frequent attention (face, bangs, hygiene areas, paws)... no more, "Oh! Her face needs attention but we don't have time to pull out the clippers and go through all the ordeal and aftermath of a clipping session!" I also have a large cat who can't always get his nether areas completely clean. Clippers and cats, obviously, are not a happy combination. These work well for him, too. In fact, I would recommend these for use with children who have sensory issues as well.

They work! Great idea. Incredible service. Scissors have been UPGRADED and are now VERY sharp
I just received the Scaredy-cut clippers yesterday (Wed, June 5th) and immediately set to work on my Maine Coon cat for about an hour; a challenge when your cat has 3-inch hair and a thick undercoat! BOTTOM LINE: I loved the idea (as did she) but didn't like the scissors itself very much. They seemed dull. I watched three demo videos on the how-to's so I know I was following the instructions as best as I could. And I tried the cuts using the longest 1" head on the clippers, meaning I had less hair per chop, so that should have made it even easier. I took very small tufts of fur to cut each time, yet it still typically took me 3-4 chops with the Scaredy-cut scissors to cut through the fur. When I used our older barber scissors with her fur, it cut through the fur and undercoat like butter; one cut easily did the job each time. This confirmed to me that these Scaredy-Cut scissors need to be sharper. It could be that my pair of Scardey-Cut scissors are just defective or that these scissors are not meant to be used on long-haired cats with thick undercoats... but since the most-helpful review and the company owner, Matthew, both have Maine Coons, and use Scaredy Cut with great success, I suspect the problem is either with how I'm cutting or this particular pair of scissors I'm using. Again, I think the idea is awesome as my Maine Coon is very skittish when it comes to noises, so electric clippers were out. And she purred the entire time, thinking she was getting a lengthy massage! I *AM* impressed by the company's quick and thoughtful responses to customer concerns. Thank you for that, Matthew. -Terry PS: to be fair to the company, if I find I am cutting her hair wrongly with the scissors or that the scissors are merely defective and another pair fixes the problem, I will immediately come here and edit this review and up the star rating. I WANT this company to succeed! __________________________________________________ EDIT: Amazing. Within hours of posting this review, Matthew of Scaredy Cut had contacted me AND mailed me a replacement pair of scissors to try out. Now *that* is some impressive customer service! ************************************************** EDIT 22 March 2013: I've now had these scissors 9 months and used them to trim my Maine Coon's hair 3 times. Each time it gets a little easier and I'm faster at it. The secret is to have scissors that are tight (I had to have mine replaced) and to take my time. Cut small tufts at first and not too deep. Make more than one pass. Follow the video. It works. I cut her hair today down to the undercoat and evened out the fur and brushed her in less than an hour (this is on a VERY LARGE 14 lbs female cat!) ... and she looks pretty good. And that is taking her fur from 3 inches down to about 1/2 inch (except for her head, cowl and tail, which I didn't touch). BOTTOM LINE: They work and get the job done and my cat purrs the entire time. I will add that the scissors could be sharper, hence why the rating is only 4 star. They aren't barber-quality scissors and the thumb hole is too small for me. So I take my time and give my thumb a rest. But this is a LOT cheaper than taking the cat to a groomer, if she'd even allow it, which I doubt. My wish is this idea but with thin barber-quality scissors like we use to cut human hair, but that would seriously raise the price as such scissors are expensive. So for the money, THESE ARE GREAT! And EVERY email or inquiry is answered quickly. They bend over backwards to make you happy. Seriously! ________________________________________ Nov 26, 2014 EDIT: The company upgraded the scissors and asked me to try them out... Wow. MUCH sharper! These scissors, service and idea get 5 STARS from me now. A breeze to cut my Maine Coon's incredibly long hair and dense undercoat. I highly recommend these scissors to anyone who wants to trim their cat or dog's hair. The scissors work. My cat would *never* put up with electric clippers so this idea has been a savior for me. Thanks.

Good for many, just not for me
Edited review 2/28/15: This company really stands behind their product; after I expressed my dissatisfaction with the trimmer, they immediately addressed my concerns by giving my a refund and offering me further instructions as well as a replacement trimmer. I'm impressed by that level of customer service and I truly think this is a good company that produces quality products (as I said in my original review, I love their Scaredy Cut Tiny Trim scissors). In my particular case, I was not able to use the trimmer satisfactorily (I couldn't complete step 4--evening out the fur with rapid cuts--even though I read the instructions and watched the instructional video multiple times). I opted not to accept the replacement trimmer because I don't want to take the chance of messing up my cat's fur again, but I am very satisfied with the company's prompt and polite resolution of the situation. - - - - - Original review: I wanted to like this tool, I really did. I have the Scaredy Cut Tiny Trim scissors and I love them, so when I saw this I thought it would be a wonderful way to easily and inexpensively groom my long-haired cat myself. Spoilers: it wasn't. The pros of this tool is that it is not bothersome or alarming to the animal. The cons are that I gave my cat a bowl cut. A BOWL CUT. Have you seen Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber? That's what my beautiful cat looked like. The directions say that this rough, ragged look is a normal stage in the process; in the last step, you're supposed to effortlessly glide in with the trimmer and snip-snip-snip the fur into a lovely, short, uniform cut like the animals' in the product video, but that didn't work out for me. I felt so bad about making my cat look like a social reject that I had to take him to the groomer's so they could fix it. The only groomer's office that was open for me to drop him off at before work was PetSmart, and they only do Lion Cuts on cats. Have you seen a Lion Cut on a cat before? Go on, Google it--I'll wait here. Ok, did you see it? Horrible, right? It's flat-out ugly. My little guy was walking around with a shaved body and fur booties for months until all his fur grew in again. In this time period I bought a lot of festive sweaters for him to cover up what I'd done. Maybe an expert animal groomer can use this tool with confidence and get great results, but I can't. It was a costly mistake.

Great DIY tool
The first time I received the product there was an issue with its effectiveness in actually cutting the hair. The scissors have an adjustable knob to create more or less pressure between the blades cutting edges. For some reason it was just not giving me the results I expected. The company reached out after my return to inquire. Through the messages I could see this smaller business was really invested in their product and genuinely cared for the feedback and opportunity to “make it right”. With the arrival of a replacement, I was able to put it to use this week. It was much better this time around! My guy is getting much more sensitive in his older age and has never really enjoyed our grooming sessions. As dogs age out they tend to get a bit lumpy and bumpy. This product is very helpful in avoiding those trouble areas with clippers and still achieving an accurate cut. We find it especially helpful on his small sensitive legs. As a DIY pet owner it’s simplicity in design and effectiveness was just what I needed. To be honest I have, over the years, tried to rig up something similar at times of frustration. Not knowing what to even search for to locate an item like this and not seeing it (at the time) on any group platforms as a common tool of the trade. I am extremely pleased with both the product and the customer service support provided. The only thing I could add as a comment for “improvement” would be to have an option to purchase ONLY the scissor element of the product. While my main use of the scissors is rounding out his legs I struggle to only use the right handed pair as my hands tire and it is difficult to maneuver around legs when I am in a stationary set up. I may not be explaining myself well but regardless of my issues the product itself is of good and useful quality. Their care and dedication to “making it right” and providing a useful tool to ease the task of grooming was a sign of a quality company. Give it a try if you DIY. Your pooch will thank you.

Love Hate Relationship & Blade needs to be sharper
After receiving this set I understand some of the negative reviews about this. So let me start off with the positives. First, I love how relaxed my dog is when I cut her hair. She literally went to sleep while I was trimming away at her body, this is hugely different from the anxiety she experiences when she goes to the groomers or when I try to home groom her. She was snoring away and not at all bothered by what I was doing and she is definitely a scaredy dog that would run at the sound of a pen dropping to the ground. She is a senior dog with back problems as well so I love anything that can alleviate the stress she experiences when she gets groomed. The scissor and clipper set is also super cute in hot pink, it comes in a super cute pouch, love the presentation. While it is quiet, it is not as straight forward as just simply clipping away since you have to angle it correctly otherwise you will get uneven cut. The cut is also not exactly the length of the guard, if you snap it on the scissor you will notice that there is a bit of space between where the cut would actually be and the length of the guards. Because my girl is a curly haired poodle, you definitely need to brush out the hair and pull the hair up to get even cuts or to be able to cut at all. Her hair is really soft so if I just glide the guard over it would just smoosh it instead of cut it. This is why I said its not as straight forward as running the scissor through the body and just clipping, it definitely requires some more work on the cutter's part and definitely requires a much longer time if you want to give even haircut using this set instead of clippers. I didn't find a problem with the size of the scissor but I have small and slim hands, I could see how someone could have trouble with the scissor though and yes they do get uncomfortable after some time but I think that is all scissors. With that being said I would still put up with the long cutting time, pain from holding the scissor for a long time etc etc since my girl is so calm and relaxed around it. HOWEVER, there is a deal breaker for me and Im still waiting to give it one more chance before deciding if Im sending these back or not, the blade is quite dull. It started out great but not long after, I started noticing that it would not cut as easily and required me to angle it a certain way or cut it from certain section of the scissor to be able to cut, this is just after having used this for 2 hours tops. Maybe I got a bad pair, but if it is dull then it is really pretty useless, I wish scaredy cut could make better scissors, I would gladly pay more if these were good scissors as it is stress free for my dog. It would also be great if the cut is the guard length, which would require the guard to be directly attached to the scissor instead of attached to a thick plate that extend a few mm from where the cut would actually be. Going to give it a try in a few days and see if I want to keep these. Like I said, If the scissor wasn't dull, I would be ok with all the other not so great things as it just requires more time and effort on my part but if that can make grooming less stressful for my girl, I would gladly do it, PLEASE MAKE A BETTER SCISSOR! OR A PROFESSIONAL LINE!

2nd pair not as noisy but still not cat friendly for my VERY mellow cat
Follow-up since receiving an unsolicited replacement from the seller: Seller sent a 2nd pair that has the serration filed off and they appear to be coated with some thing?? as well as tightened. He promised to refund if 2nd pair doesn't work. It doesn't and I've not heard from seller since. The 2nd pair is not as noisy as the first. The are tighter and it appears as though everything that could be done to make the scissors more quiet, has been done. Unfortunately, they are simply not going to work for my cat. I was sitting next to her on the floor when I opened the second package and tried out the scissors and she simply doesn't like the sound they make when they open & close. I have one of the most mellow cats on the planet. She is extremely trusting and very patient with the grooming process. I still recommend avoiding these scissors for cats. They will not reach the sanitary area with a guard comb and the overall process is too slow with constant metal scraping opening and closing of scissors. If you want to see how your cat will tolerated Scaredy cut, get a fine tooth comb, comb a little of their hair, and use a pair of ordinary household, heavy metal scissors to cut it. I bought this clipper set from Amazon and they are much easier to use on my cat. Very fast, cuts fine cat hair easily and you are finished within seconds. They also cost about $8 LESS than the Scaredy cut scissor. Wahl 9160-210 Pet Clipper Kit Feedback prior to receiving 2nd pair: These scissors are NOISY! While they do not make the vibrating hum of an electric trimmer, they do make a LOT of noise for scissors. I own a lot of scissors, various purpose scissors, and these are hands down the loudest of all. They remind me of old dressmaker shears that made a distinct scratching sound with every open and close of the blades. 3 stars because they do cut fine cat hair. Unfortunately, most people looking to trim a cat needs something to trim the area under their tail for sanitary reasons and these scissors can't do that. They shortest hair guard is too long for that area. Even if the hair guard allowed closer access, the scissors are too long, too bulky, and the awkward angle required because of the need to get the hair guard side against the skin, simply will not work. If that is the reason you are considering buying these, don't do it. The smaller scissors without the guard by Scaredy Cut will access this area but it is too dangerous to get scissors in this area of a cat for a non professional an no proper restraint. I should have returned these when I could.

Excellent product; fantastic company.
I have never written a product review but my experience with this product is worth telling - and hopefully helpful to those that view it... I ordered the Scaredy Cut clipper set in December 2011, received the item in just a few days, and set out to use the largest comb (#6) with clippers on Jake, my 8 month old 60 lb labradoodle. While trying to change the combs out (it came with the smallest comb installed), the comb plate broke off the scissors and the plastic clip broke on the comb - wow I thought - complete junk!... After reading the few 'not so good' reviews here at Amazon I noticed that Matthew Michel of the Scaredy Cut company had replied to all with genuine concern and offers of assistance. I contacted the company by email immediately and received a response from Matthew within 3 hours. Here's what I was told - the plate is attached to the scissors with two spot welds that are extremely strong when in the correct place. Occasionally the spot welds are misplaced and the contact is weakened - which happened in my case. In addition the combs can be stiff at first use but once broken-in should work fine. Matthew suggested running them under warm water and pre-flexing so the combs are more pliable when attaching to the plate. Finally he offered to ship out a replacement set immediately with combs that he would pre-flex personally. I received the replacement kit in a few days with all combs pre-flexed and ready to go. Placed the #6 comb on the clippers and set to work. It took me about 2 hours total to do the whole pup - worked in 20 minute intervals with breaks between - I'm guessing a bit over an hour of actual cutting - enough to get a pretty good blister. Then did some trimming around the neck and face with smaller combs. I cut an incredible amount of hair - even clogged the vacuum cleaner! This was his first cut so I expect that maintaining it will be a bit easier and not so time consuming. Considering I have no previous experience with pet grooming, Scaredy Cut worked EXTREMELY well. Nothing describes the results better than a picture so I posted `before' and `after' shots with the product image at the top of the page. I didn't have the greatest `before' image, but I think you can tell Jake had an abundance of fur. The product worked perfect for me. Jake is much happier (and cooler!) without all the hair, and looks better too! The response and genuine concern from the company is exceptional. I highly recommend it for anyone who can't - or doesn't want to - use electric clippers, or shell out the money for professional grooming.

Worth every penny spent
These scissors were bought to remove matted hair on the hind quarters of senior cat who also has arthritis in this area. Usually a mobile professional cat groomer would bathe, brush and would trim her hair with scissors since she doesm't like the vibrating and noise of the pet trimmers used by the groomer. I was trying to use regular scissors even freshly sharpened but theu were not doing the job on the hair and apparently was pulling on the hair which made the cat react in pain. Since I was cat sitting for forever family while they relocated to another state I was unable to find a groomer to come to my house and was running out of options until I came across the Scaredy Cut scissors and even though these are more expensive than others being sold on Amazon I could see from the pictures they were high quality. I was able to remove all the matted hair on her hind quarters while she laid in my lap unaware of when I was actually cutting her hair. The scissors are very sharp and are made to cut hair which meant the blades were not pulling the hair. I also didnt have to worry about accidentily cutting her skin with sharp tips since these are rounded. The small trimming scissors worked great for her neck and face area. I highly recommend these to anyone who has a cat. The extra cost to buy these was money well spent, easy to use and worked as advertised. Don't waste your time on any other product online cheaper or more expensive.
