Unbelievable
As I have mentioned in several reviews I have posted in the past, I have designed and sold speakers myself as well as being a audiophile for many years. I have always felt that smaller woofers produce cleaner bass than larger woofers. Larger woofer flex more under stress and act less like a piston than smaller drivers. I also never believed that deep bass was accurate from small cabinets. I believe this opinion was accurate for a long time but technology has changed. The first good sounding small subwoofer I heard was the original Sunfire. It was able to produce great bass because it had a woofer that was specifically designed to produce only bass frequencies and it was driven by a over 2000 watts of power. Prior to that, many "so-called" subwoofer had very low quality amplifiers that mostly produced distortion. The distortion caused things like windows to rattle but very little really deep bass was being produced. If you looked at the graphs of many of these subwoofers, they could produce 110 db or more sound pressure at 25Hz or so but this was 10 dB down. The -3dB point would be more like 40Hz.I purchased a Paradyme dual 8 inch subwoofer and really liked the subwoofer. It was great for music. The bass it produced was clean and quick. When I received the Jamo, I was surprised how large the box was. The unit was also heavy. The Jamo claims to have 400 watts maximum output. The woofer looks very impressive. It has a metallic finish. I did my best to adjust the subwoofer while listening to movies. During the movies, my couch would shake. I only had the volume turned up a small way.The bass I was getting from movies was astonishing and I was only barely using the subwoofer.Once I switched to music, I found I needed to turn down the subwoofer even more. The settings I had were overpowering the music. I set my Yamaha to cross over the front speakers at 100hz and then did my best to match the subwoofer. I am currently using a pair of Sony HD speakers. Despite never seeing these around, I am very impressed with these. They produce good bass on their own but are easily over driven given the small size of their driver. Crossing them over at 100 takes a lot of pressure off of their small woofer. The Yamaha receiver allows me to play in stereo mode without the subwoofer and crossover or with. I did my best to match the bass sound from the 2 channel while adding the subwoofer.Once I had the settings properly adjusted, I was simply blown away by the overall sound. In the past, I had over $40,000 worth of audio equipment. I had a 250watt per channel Plinius Amplifier and a pair of Shainian Diapasons. I played Steely Dan Aja and James Taylor Up on the Roof as I knew these pieces very well. I also listened to Rebecca Pidgeon doing Spanish Harlem as well as newer music to include Upton Fun with Bruno Mars.I added up the money I spent for my system. I had under $1000 invested in my complete system. Using the Jamo J-110 to reinforce the bass brought out the dynamics and full tonal range of the system.I then decided to try out some movies, leaving the settings. Even at these lower settings, the subwoofer really produced great bass. I believe that the bass for movies is better from the Jamo than the Paradme. I still regard the Paradyme highly..
