Rating depends on what you are looking for (it's an average)
In the past 30 years I'd been lucky to study a lot of different combat sports, self-defense systems, and martial arts. My favorites have been Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and boxing. I picked this up during the "social distancing" time because I was stuck at home, couldn't go to class, and I thought it would be interesting.Although the book is entitled "Combat Judo," if you are looking for a book about Judo as it's understood today, this isn't your book. There is stabbing with knives, biting ears, lots of hitting people in the privates, lots of sucker punches, etc. (I know there is striking in traditional old-school Judo, but this goes way beyond those strikes). The system set forth in the book is probably a lot closer to modern Krav Maga. There are not a lot of throws in this book.BUT, if you take this book as a historical look at the development of combat and dirty tricks, it's great. The section on where and how to stab people is something else and you just don't see that in modern books. In this respect, it's a really fascinating read. So, if you were approaching it as a way to study techniques when you are away from a modern class, you are going to be disappointed (2-3 stars for this use). If you were approaching this book from the perspective of a historical look (with some crazy dirty stuff along the way), I think it's a 5 star book. It's really interesting. But make sure you are getting it for the right reasons.

Typical old school Judo, with some military Combatives tossed in.
Short, simple and efficient. There are some discrepancies here and there, like telling you not to do things in the 10 “rules,” then doing them in the various demos. Other than that, decent little book.
