Quality pen
I was a bit unsure about ordering this as it costs a fair bit more than I would normally spend on a Chinese made fountain pen, however upon receipt of the item my fears disappeared. For a start, this is quite a large and weighty pen - similar size and weight to my Jinhao 159 and bigger than my X750, which is something that I really like. It feels great in the hand and the materials give it a solid feel, not to mention they look great too.Upon filling it with ink (Diamine Jet Black in this case) it writes with a lovely smooth line and doesn't jump or skip. All in all I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend it to others.

I'm happy with this
I love pens and have a collection. I've heard about Duke and wanted to try one but I felt they were expensive. I can understand Duke's ethos. Their pens are art statements, made from superior materials, but unlike a lot of art, they have a function. You don't just show them to people, you can write with them as well. If all you want to do is write then get a pencil and store your money in the bank.Well, this pen's price is a bit above my normal expenditure but I was encouraged by the lack of presentation box. I don't need it when it's a present for myself, and the box will usually bump up the price. It arrived in bubble wrap, so I know the money was for the pen and nothing else. The price was low for a Duke, I believe. The pen is not pencil-thin, neither is it very fat. I suppose it's somewhere in the middle.Nearly all fountain pens these days are cartridge pens. They come with a device called a converter, because it converts the cartridge pen into a traditional fountain pen. This pen has one. There are two standards for cartridges: International Standard (2.6mm hole) and Parker Standard (3.4mm hole). The International size is used by over 90% of pen manufacturers, and this is the size used by this pen.Alright - the pen looks well-made, the converter works and doesn't leak and the weight of the pen is comfortable. What's left? The nib. This is where I had a spot of bother. I am used to it, but if you are not familiar with pens then you might be perplexed. If you put a cartridge in a new pen then you can't expect it to write because there will be no ink in the last inch. It's always better to use the converter at first because filling it from the bottle puts ink in that last inch. I did that, but the pen didn't write. This is not uncommon. The way to get around this problem follows. If I wrote with no pressure then little or no ink appeared on the paper. If I pressed as I would with an old-fashioned ballpoint then it wrote. Pressing on a fountain pen is not recommended. They are supposed to glide over the paper using the ink as a lubricant. I knew the problem was with the tines (the two prongs that make up the nib). They were too close, but by only a fraction. I put an ink cartridge (or pen cap) on the table, held the pen horizontally with the last 2 or 3mm of the nib on the cartridge, then pressed down lightly for 5 seconds. this opens up the tines a fraction and allows the ink to flow. If you are not sure what slight pressure is then do it very gently until the pen writes. Doing it several times is better than doing it once but too hard. This is like a guitar. You buy one and take it out of the box but it doesn't play well. It needs setting up. If it's your first pen or guitar then you wouldn't know that, unless you have a friend more knowledgeable than you.The pen writes beautifully now, like a fine point.I ought to give it four and a half stars. Manufacturers of upmarket pens should include a slip of paper explaining this, and that they can't do the final setup without making the pen secondhand.

Best with "wet" ink...
I love the look and feel of this pen. Build quality is great - but let down by two very small factors:a) the silver band near the end of the body (probably needed to keep the bamboo in proper shape) is just a tad too close to the end - it means that the cap is always slightly loose and a little floppy when posted. I found it comfortable to use with the cap left on desk - but not always convenient if I am out and don't have a desk handy.b) the clip is tight - too tight! Virtually impossible to clip it onto my shirt or jacket pocket. On the other hand, it comes with a neat little black protective pouch, so it can roll around in my pocket rather clip it on!Aside from these factors, it is a beautiful pen - I personally could do without the imitation pearl at the top of the cap, but I'm sure some people will love it. The silvery cloud effect moulded into the section is a nice touch. The Medium-Fine nib is, as I would expect for a Chinese pen, a bit finer than the average European equivalent.Which brings me to inking up...I initially filled up with Octopus "Bronze" ink. Not a brand I have used before, but it was on my desk at the time I needed ink. First results were disappointing - lots of skipping, etc, the ink flow was simply inadequate. Not wishing to write off the pen on the basis of the flow of an unknown ink, I tried the easy option - I flushed out and changed ink. Noodlers is an obvious choice - a known very "wet" ink - and hey presto, 'Apache Sunset' worked great. Perhaps not quite as wet as I am used to, but the nib is finer than most of my pens and I can work on that. I then tried Akkerman SBRE Brown (in the Dutch Masters Series). Not quite as wet as the Noodlers, but perfectly adequate - in fact no detectable difference except for the drying speed of the ink.To sum up then, a lovely pen, which writes very well - and incidentally writes unexpectedly well on the back of the nib for those extra-extra fine margin notes or whatever. You'll need a dark coloured ink for this or it will be invisible. You may need to rethink on the ink if you use a particularly "dry" type - I have at least a dozen to hand so I just pick what suits....

Elegant substantial pen
The design of this pen is really nice and bamboo really feels very good in your hands. This is a very substantial pen (150 mm capped / 132 mm uncapped /41 g capped and filled) ). This pen is big enough to be used unposted and it may be too long and unbalanced . The pen comes with a converter and the steel nib writes nicely. All in all this is a pen with superb design and quite a decent writer, so it is a very good value for money.

Poor quality
It's a nice pen that I enjoy writing with however the thread in the pen-top has stripped meaning the pen-top can no longer be screwed on. This is very disappointing as it means the pen stays in a single place at home and I can't travel with it. Ultimately I must conclude that it is very poor quality.

Salve!
