There are some interesting observations, but I didn't like it as well as the first edition. I got the impression that the compilers must have said,"Ah, let's find a few more expressions and publish another book. Maybe it'll sell." It's useful and interesting, but it could have been much better.

The linguistic polymorphism caused by the socio- cultural differences and geographic- ethnic diversity of the people, cannot prevent us from aspiring to a model or forming patterns for references for a standard language, and thereby to promote unity in the language. We reject protectionism and linguistic chauvinism as written in 1971, by the linguist Angel Rosenblat in Nuestralengua en ambos mundo.It seems that some have misunderstood our work with a sociolinguistic investigation and have misunderstood our intentions in Hablando bien se entiende la gente, which was to use a humorous tone, accompanied by illustrations in order to dispel orthographic and grammatical doubts. We are not clearing or penetrating into sociolinguistic elucidations.Some of the reviews seem to not understand the work or they have not read it because they fall into what they criticize. They dismiss all the work of a group of professionals who have worked for many years in educating people in the use of the Spanish language. They want to impose their views that lack objectivity and scientific evidence. They do not present any valid theories in their arguments; they just present their opinions that seem to be more the result of emotions, than the product of good reasoning. They seem to be using personal attacks, rather than acknowledge the good work that ANLE has been doing. They attest to their ability of know-how and point their fingers. By doing so, they fall into what they criticize, a pedantic rhetoric.It would do them good to get better informed about the function of the Academy and the work we are doing because our critics are asking us to do what we have being doing for quite a while. It seems that they ignore the work that we do and they criticize us without reading or understanding us. By the way, are they doing what they advise us to do? We are even being criticized by someone who thinks that she can speak on behalf of over 30 million people in the United States. We do not consider the language of Latinos in the United States shameful.We share Noam Chomsky's point of view that "Language is a process of free creation; its laws and principles are fixed, but the manner in which the principles of generation are used is free and infinitely varied. Even the interpretation and use of words involves a process of free creation." However, it does not preclude us from writing a book again to dispel doubts and we are going to continue doing so.

Soy profesor de español y literatura en The City University of New York y enseño en una de mis clases con el texto Hablando bien se entiende la gente, un curso intermedio de la lengua española dirigido a estudiantes, llamados “Heritage Speakers” . Hablando bien se entiende la gente es pertinente, actual y práctico. Mis estudiantes no muestran ningún desencanto porque aprenden palabras y expresiones del español estándar o universal, en lugar de usar el inglés o estructuras gramaticales que vienen del uso cotidiano del inglés. Algunos estudiantes se sorprenden, unos se apenan, otros no tanto, pero todos quieren aprender más. Estos jóvenes saben que hablan un español limitado y que su nivel de comprensión es muy básico; pero todos, todos, anhelan aprenderlo a fondo tanto por fidelidad a su herencia hispánica como por razones económicas. Los empleadores de los medios de comunicación, el turismo, la banca y otras industrias, que solicitan empleados que sepan bien los dos idiomas se quejan en los Estados Unidos del desconocimiento en el uso diario de ambas lenguas. En muchos casos mientras no se mejore el uso de la lengua materna, en el caso de los inmigrantes, será una tarea compleja aprender y trasladar estos conocimientos al inglés. Los hispanos de primera, segunda y tercera generación estarán condenados a vivir dentro de ese círculo de pobreza, ya que no aprenderán bien ni el inglés ni el español. Es por ello importante que la ANLE siga trabajando en la realización de estos proyectos, ya que va en concordancia con los cambios y usos que hace el hablante de la lengua viva.
