what type of material. what makes it stay on

It is a velvet-type material. When you put it on correctly, the nap of the velvet “holds” the wig in place

Does this band work for "No Hair at all"? If not, is there anything better than the adhesive strips?

I have no hair due to chemotherapy treatments, and this wig grip works fine for me. My wig actually stayed on fine with just the little stocking type liner it came with, but I found that to be itchy. When I tried a cotton wig liner (from TLC), it felt like the wig was going to slide off, so I ordered this. It does the trick for me. I put the liner on first, then wrap this around the edge of it and put my wig on. My wig stays in place just fine, and the band is comfortable.

I have a mono top wig. Should I choose the color closest match to my skin or the wig hair?

I would think to choose the color to match your scalp. With a monofilament top, the band can show through, depending how thick the wig hair is. Unfortunately I've only seen them in hair colors, blonde, brown, and charcoal.
