Boiler Room (BD) [Blu-ray]

Financial Heat
The Boiler Room dvd has photo images of Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, and Nia Long on the front of the dvd cover. With Nicky Katt also listed to be in the movie. I admit that Boiler Room is another film that I heard about via an e-mail connected to the office of Jordan Belfort. Due to obvious and understandable legal reasons, it is mentioned during the play of the dvd that Boiler Room is fiction. This is because one can easily see the obvious parallels between Wolf of Wall Street and Boiler Room The character of Seth Davis (Ribisi) just wants to make his father proud when it comes to eking out a living for himself. Davis sees opportunity when he gets hired at a stock brokerage firm, part of the appeal being is that he is a newcomer to working in the field. Seth Davis thrives in his job and even falls in love with a fellow coworker named Abbia (Nia Long). There are obvious references to the Glengarry Ross movie in Boiler room with referencing both the movie and the Always Be Closing phrase. There is even a cultural nod to the Wall Street movie (the character of Seth Davis is seen watching the Wall Street movie with his coworkers). I just seen his name on the back of the dvd cover, yet I admit that I did not know that Ben Affleck was in the Boiler Room film until I saw him in scenes involved with doing the hiring at the stock brokerage firm. Anyhow, things seem to be going along well for Davis until he convinces a purchasing manager at a Gourmet Foods Company to be a client. To exacerbate the situation, the gourmet foods purchasing manager is not just responsible for himself, but he is shown to be both a father and husband who is trying to place a large down payment on a home with his wife (therefore the stakes are even higher than if it was just him and his wife). The following are some of the features attributed to the Boiler Room dvd-the chance to play the movie with filmmaker commentary, isolated score with composer commentary by The Angel, deleted scenes/alternate ending, theatrical trailer, cast and crew filmographies. There are also dvd rom features of a script to screen that allows a read of the screenplay and original theatrical web site on the dvd and listed to be more.

GREAT CAST IN A THOUGHT PROVOKING STORY OF GREED AND FAMILY
BOILER ROOM is a step back in time with the world was a different place. The economy was booming and the tragedy of 9/11 was yet to come. The time was ripe to make money and create a few scams along the way. A great cast heads a movie about greed, honesty and family relationships. A young Giovanni Ribisi and Vin Diesel that heads a cast that include Ben Affleck, Nia Long, Scott Caan and Ron Rifkin. Ribisi put his soul into the role of Seth Davis, an intelligent college dropout with a fractured relationship with his father, a respected judge. It's not clear how he does this but Davis drops out of college without telling his parents and sets up a casino in his fancy apartment. His casino caters to rich college students and Davis has a financial windfall. Davis draws the attention of some questionable characters who connect him with brokerage firm JT Marlin. Soon Davis is a trainee as a stock broker and promised future earnings into the millions. Seems like a dream world but soon Davis begins to question the ethics and legitimacy of the JT Marlin. The company cold calls potential investors with promises of huge profits. It is hard to believe that so many people would fall for what could be a serious scam and risk their life's savings so readily. Yet, people do and Davis becomes the top broker in training. The meat of this story is the moral dilemma Davis suffers when he begins to realize something is not adding up with JT Marlin. It seems like all he does is a way to gain acceptance from his distant father. Their relationship is never explored fully and it does bring up the question as to why the father is so distant. His attitude toward his son sets up Davis for failure. It's an interesting study in relationships and moral values. The fun of this film is seeing young versions of some popular actors like Ribisi, Diesel and Affleck along with a few faces you will recognize from later movies and TV shows. BOILER ROOM is not without flaws. More character exposition could have helped flesh out the story and people's actions but still it is a riveting look back to another time.

Great Flick about Greed and semi-redemption.
Enter the world of an ambitious young man who makes the mistake of a lifetime. Giovanni Ribisi plays, Seth, an unloved son who struggles to get traction in life. He's running an illegal casino out of his apartment, making plenty of money, but running afoul of his father who happens to be a federal judge. Dad is so unlikeable that if Seth had punched him, I would have CHEERED. Nonetheless, the lack of love is what pushes Seth into the biggest gambling hall in the world, namely the stock market. A former friend shows up for a little blackjack and pitches Seth on the opportunity to become a stock broker in a little known firm far from New York City. Seth takes the plunge, buying into the camaraderie, dreams of wealth, and lifestyle of the heavy hitters that include some great performances by the likes of Vin Diesel among others. It takes a while, but Seth figures out this place is a "boiler room." Too late, the FBI is on the hunt and Seth has to figure out who is friend and foe as well as how to recover some lost funds for a client who trusted him with his life savings. Ribisi delivers a command performance. You are truly in his characters head and world as this story of greed and ambition unfolds. While the plot is fairly predictable, I enjoyed the ride. Go back and watch this movie a couple of times. You'll see the subtlety of Seth's descent and salvation. It's worth it.

ähnlich Wolf of Wallstreet
